He ought to have done it for his own sake, but wasn't sure it was a good idea.
His beloved arranged it for the sake of others, and for him.
They all lived happily ever after because of this.

Are they bats? Birds? Bugs? this one, not sea animals
Other sea animal: a fish (scientifically)? A mammal? it's hard to tell. I think this one is mythical (I forgot about it when answering your earlier questions, sorry) but not widespread, it was invented for the story. Let's call it a giant sea monster type. It's referred to as "Little ___" in the story, but this is a Non Indicative Name.

Does Romeo want to divorce/otherwise get rid of his other 999 wives (and keep the beloved Juliet)? Well, I rather think divorce would be impractical. He could "get rid of" the 999 wives (and he was being annoyed by them enough to want to) and his beloved even advised him to teach them a lesson, but he didn't want to because...
Is he officially married to them? Through ceremony et al? he's officially married to either 700 or 300 of them, I forget which, the rest are concubines (not that it matters for the story)

Now I have to figure out how these butterflies and this sea monster is relevant...exactly and precisely so...you may call said sea monster the "Animal" if you like, that's what the story says when it's not calling him by his name.

Did anyone have to fight the sea monster? No, he's a very nice monster, although rather greedy.

as advised by the lovely Doriana kitteh, a RECAP:

He ought to have done it for his own sake, but wasn't sure it was a good idea.
His beloved arranged it for the sake of others, and for him.
They all lived happily ever after because of this.

It has been discovered that "he", termed "Romeo", is King Solomon, and his "beloved", "Juliet", is the Queen of Sheba/Sabea. His other 999 wives are relevant, though whether they are full wives or concubines is not. A sea monster, known only as "Animal" is relevant in the beginning of the story (HINT: The Animal is relevant to why "he wasn't sure it was a good idea") but the main characters besides Solomon and the Queen of Sabea are two Butterflies, a husband and wife.

The "It" mentioned twice, and the "this" are all the same thing - an event Solomon's actions orchestrated. No contest is involved. This story is *not* Biblical, but was written centuries after Solomon's death...indeed, centuries after Shakespeare's death.

Does this involve scaring the other wives? Embarrassing them? Making them think in a profound or philosophical way?

Reminds me of a poem:

King David and King Solomon led many merry lives
With many merry concubines and many merry wives.
When old age overtook them, without too many qualms,
King Solomon wrote Proverbs; King David wrote the Psalms.

*Ahem* =)
Just So? Yes indeed, O Best Beloved (aka Soli Kitteh)...I suppose that is good enough for a
***SPOILER***
In Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories, one of my particular favourites is The Butterfly That Stamped, the story of Suleiman-bin-Daoud, Solomon the Son of David, and of his Head Queen Balkis the most beautiful, Queen of Sheba. And so that was all right, Best Beloveds...do you see?

Solomon wanted to show what a wise and generous King he was, and so he made a feast for all the animals of the world, and a great Animal came out of the sea and swallowed it all, saying that he, Small Porgies, was the smallest of his nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine brothers and sisters, and had been sent to ask when dinner would be ready. Solomon realized that he'd laid the feast for the sake of showing off, and not because he was being good or wise, so he vowed never to show off again, not even for the sake of his nine hundred and ninety-nine quarrelsome wives, who could be so easily silenced if he called up his djinni with the magic ring on his finger.

Balkis was his very Best Beloved, being his Head Queen and one who never argued with him, and one day when she and Solomon were both in the garden, they happened across two quarrelsome Butterflies, so she constructed a plan...but I won't spoil the story Here it is.

THERE was never a Queen like Balkis,
From here to the wide world's end;
But Balkis tailed to a butterfly
As you would talk to a friend.
There was never a King like Solomon,
Not since the world began;
But Solomon talked to a butterfly
As a man would talk to a man.
She was Queen of Sabaea--
And he was Asia's Lord--
But they both of 'em talked to butterflies
When they took their walks abroad!

- Rudyard Kipling
