A woman writes something in a book, closes it, and hands it to a man. He smiles. She smiles. She walks away.

What is going on?

Before the woman writes in the book, is there anything already written in it? Printed in it?
Is the type of book relevant? Is it a bible? A novel? A work of fiction? Non-fiction? A diary? A journal? A log book? A matchbook? The kind of book that one could expect to read?

Does the woman write a sentence? A number? Series of numbers? One word? Several words? Someone's name?

This is a very intriguing puzzle with a great title!

Is the type of book relevant? No Is it a bible? A novel? A work of fiction? Non-fiction? A diary? A journal? A log book? A matchbook? Certainly not this! The kind of book that one could expect to read? Yes. Specific book subject n.r. Let's say a novel.

Does the woman write a sentence? A number? Series of numbers? One word? Several words? Someone's name? See above.

Was it a printed book? Yes If so, "fact" or fiction? N.r. Assume fiction if you wish.

Was it a notebook? If so, was there already writing in it? A guestbook? Diary? No to all of these.

Was the writing in the book done as a cover up for something else? Were there others present apart from these two? More people relevant for the story?

Is the woman the librarian? The man?
Does the book belong to the library?
Has the woman checked the book out? The man?
Does the woman write on one of the book's pages? Inside the front cover? Inside the back cover?
Does she open the book to a random place and write? Or is it an intentional action at a specific place in the book?

Had another person previously written something on the same page?
Did the woman want the page marked for some reason?
Had she already read the book? Did she intend to read it sometime in the future?
Had she checked this book out before?

Is it an old library that still has the little cards where you write your name to check out books? (Oh my, did I just age myself with that one!)

Was she marking the book so that she didn't have to remember that she had read it already? (But why would a librarian smile at that?)

Is it an old library that still has the little cards where you write your name to check out books? (Oh my, did I just age myself with that one!) It has those as well as the more modern kind, and I sometimes see my name on the cards in the older books - which really dates me!

Was she marking the book so that she didn't have to remember that she had read it already? Yes!(But why would a librarian smile at that?)Because it was his idea!

***********SPOILER*************
When checking out books one day, I told the librarian that I thought I had read a certain book, but I wasn't sure. He said that some library patrons would make a small, inconspicuous mark, such as an initial, on a certain page. That way, I can look on page 22, low on the inner margin, for a pencilled "S" and realize I had read it before. Since I combine a voracious appetite for reading with a not-so-voracious memory, I thought that was good advice.

Thanks to all in the cast of characters!

Wow! I never thought a librarian would actually encourage writing in a library book. Good one!
