So was this some kind of message students needed to give in writing or orally to someone at the school before? Or the school to them?

And now it may be done by e-mail? Through the school's website? Through some other online communication?

Or: now they don't have to do it at all anymore?

Biology? (If so, neurobiology? evolutional bilogy? C sociobiology? molecular biology? marine biology? C botany? C system biology?) I'm not sure what system biology is Biotechnology? Biomedical sciences? Medical engineering? Neuroscience? Pharmaceutics? Genetics? none of those, but I've put a C next to the closest ones. Maybe I should have said 'yope' when asked if it the most likely field was life science

is the practice that of recycling paper? being educated about recycling in general? is the idea that since we have e-readers and computers now, paper won't have to be recycled for textbooks, notebooks and the like (presuming the teacher/professor permits assignments to be emailed in rather than printed out?)

Writing on one/both sides of the paper relevant?
(I suspect that "paperless" classes will end up like "paperless" offices, using just as much or more paper.)

My manager once tried to enforce the rule that notes have to be taken with a pencil, then typed out (when necessary) and then erased - so that each employee would basically end up with one single sheet of paper. Something like that relevant?

Which reminds me of the following joke:
A physicist needs some new equipment and asks the dean for funding. The dean then says: "I'm fed up. You always want those fancy devices that are terribly expensive and become obsolete after a year or two.
Look at the math department - they only need pencils, paper and a waste paper basket." After a second, he adds: "Or the philosophy department - they only need pencils and paper!"

No offense intended against philosophers! (:

Regarding Solitaire's guess: In this day and age, I STILL have classes where you're not allowed to submit anything that's printed on both sides. Why in the world not?? I can sort of understand the single-sided rule when you're hand writing stuff because it can bleed through the paper and make your writing hard to read. But computers, and even typewriters, produce perfectly legible two-sided documents.

I've occasionally had professors ask for a photocopy of a paper I've written to keep in their files. With email, there's no need to make a copy. Are duplicate copies of assignments (for this or other reasons) relevant?

I think you clever lateral thinkers gotten close enough for me to declare a

********* SPOILER ****************

In the 1980's I saw a syllabus for a course on "ecofeminism" that included the sentence (in capitals): "ALL WRITTEN WORK MUST BE TURNED IN ON THE BACK OF RECYLCED PAPER." This meant that all students were required to act in accordance with the professor's political views about the recycling, regardless of whether they agreed with those views. This was about as appropriate as requiring all students to campaign for Green Party candidates. It certainly didn't encourage students to express dissenting views. But since students now are apt to turn in papers as email attachments, this particular outrage has become obsolete. Please check out my new puzzle!

I'm confused. Did the professor mean "on the back of paper that had already been used for something else?" In which case it would be all right to use a paper grocery bag.
Or did he/she mean "on paper that had been reprocessed and sold as recycled" in which case how could you tell the back from the front?
Not strong on logic, I would say.

Not strong on logic, I would say. And even weaker on open-minded & tolerance!!
