For a while, I had a scrund about elephants. I should have known it was too fantastic to be true. But when I found out the truth, it was even more fantastic. |

Infrasound relevant? Long distance communication?Yes! When I learned that elephants could communicate with rumbles too low for human ears to hear, that ended the scrund I had, which was that elephants had another ability, not related to communication - or at least that one elephant had this ability. |

elephants may not forget, but kaylee kittehz iz very gud at it...even wen haz cheezburgur. *sharez cheezburgurz with soli kitteh* plz tu haz recat of what we knowz? and maybe a hint? *nomz* Okeh... RECAT: I had a scrund about elephants, based on what I read about the behavior of one elephant. I extrapolated from that that all elephants had a certain ability. It was not infrasound, which I now know they do have. It is not related to communication. It might be thought of as a 'human' ability, but it is not memory specifically, although the elephant would have to remember some things. So what did that one elephant do that made me think she had a 'human' quality? Or what was that quality?? |

Solitaire, I was sure I had this one - until you said that it relates to the elephant's "profession." Looking again at your scrund, and how you say that "it was even more fantastic" - I want to ask this carefully. Does this have to do with certain practices in some elephant-populated places in Africa? If I'm right, you'll know at once the miracle of which I'm writing. And if I'm wrong, you can set me right easily! So glad to be back, and so glad to have a great puzzle by you! Fiona |

Do they hear trees falling far away (due to the vibrations)? and can find them? but you thought they could understand a human giving verbal directions to where they fell? No, but sense of hearing is relevfant, as explained somewhere above. Solitaire, I was sure I had this one - until you said that it relates to the elephant's "profession." Looking again at your scrund, and how you say that "it was even more fantastic" - I want to ask this carefully. Does this have to do with certain practices in some elephant-populated places in Africa? No. What is it - or do you want to use this in a puzzle sometime?. Anyway, nothing to do with Africa. If I'm right, you'll know at once the miracle of which I'm writing. And if I'm wrong, you can set me right easily! So glad to be back, and so glad to have a great puzzle by you! HINT: It has been established that the elephant's 'profession' is logging. However, this puzzle does not relate to logging per se, but to a similarity betwwen elephants and humans who practice a 'profession.' |

Drinking water relevant? Bathing? This; no to the rest. Mud? Running water? Did you think elephants could tell the time? YES! ***********SPOILER*************** I read about some elephants who worked in the teak forests of SE Asia. After working for a set number of days, they were taken to the beach for a little R & R. One elephant was working by helself (with a human foreman) away from the others, but when the others went on vacation, she went on strike and refused to work until she got to go too. I said: "That's amazing. The elephant somehow was able to tell the passage of time, possibly by the position of the sun." I now know that that isn't so. Instead, she was getting infrasound messages from her coworkers, the pachyderm equivalent of "Having wonderful time, wish you were here!" Thanks all, and kudos to Galfish, who deserves to have his accomplishment trumpeted. |
