We mammals have an interesting ratio that we share, and it runs: 1 - 2 - 5.

Humans, kittehs who love cheezburgehs, otters, dolphins, rhinos ... it isn't only mammals, and sometimes it's more complicated than 1 - 2 - 5, but let's simplify, because it's a basic, scientifically proven rule.

What is the ratio, and why is it important?

(You can solve simply the first half. The second part is more difficult. I might send chocolates or movie tickets to those who reason why the importance.)

Oh, and I promise next time to send, like, a locked room murder mystery. Okay?

Hugs to all,
Fiona

Hi, Potato! You were my first friend here, I think. So, yay, glad to see you again.

Any of these relevant?

Size?

Well, it's true for whales and walruses; but also small creatures such as squirrels and even - I accentuate the "even" - birds do exhibit this 1-2-5.

It is entirely fair for you to ask me which creatures, in particular, share what I consider a rather wondrous 1 - 2 - 5 ratio. In fact, I encourage you to do so.

Age? Hmm. No.

Tails? Relevent

Limbs? Definitely relevent

Brains? Sadly, no, not in this game

Teeth? Again, no

Offspring? Aren't you the clever one! Umm. No.

Food? Again, clever, but no.

Potato, I was unfair, when you asked about brains. I would have said YES if you had asked about the head that the brain is inside of. I'm really trying to be fair here.

One body? Two arms? Five fingers per arm? Decimal system relevant? How we have ten digits in our arms and ten decimal digits? Two limbs related to left brain-right brain in any way? I remember reading speculation that, for instance, a three armed, three-legged alien with eight digits on each leg would likely use hexidecimal and have three brain sections. The latter is due to evolutionary tendencies and the former is due to counting stuff.

And stop offending the penguins of Gregory Coke Land. Although speaking of Gregory Coke, well, you'll just have to wait for my next puzzle.

I'm suddenly regretting posting that instead of emailing it... If I'm right, I apologize for ruining the puzzle.

[SPOILER!!!!]

Balin and Gregory, you both got it.

Extend your arm.

Upper arm has one bone.
Lower arm has two.
Then there are a bunch of bone-knobs, (with which you punch someone? I don't know)
Then there are 5 extensions.

The same with the feet, of course.

And yes, every mammal from dolphin to horse to ... well, chicken isn't a mammal, but - they all show the same development.

It's universal, almost, at least in THIS world. (Someone whistle the X-Files theme...)
