Is hygiene relevant? Had you just sneezed into your hand? Or touched a used hanky? Or is it the other way round? Do you now want to touch the handles to avoid getting something from the handles onto your hand? Do you opdofo and clodohi in your apartment? Do you do it with doors in public places? | ||

That's it! ************SPOILER*************** I hate winter, even our mild winters, because I shock myself all winter long, on doors with metal handles. Whenever possible, I try to open them with something other than my fingers, though that isn't always possible with car doors, or I try to break the circuit somehow. It's usually possible to close them with a hipswing. And that closes this puzzle. Good job, all, especially Andy! | ||

I also suffer from static electricity during the winter. Some tips: * What you wear on your feet indoors matters. Walking around barefoot or in thin cotton socks helps a lot. * Electricity is generated when dissimilar materials are brought in contact or disengaged - friction/rubbing is not necessary, it just makes for more intimate contact. Rising from a fabric-padded chair, or taking off a sweater or jacket often causes you to get charged *If you touch a big metal object while you do this, you will not get shocked (or, at most, get soms small shocks form the garment itself). Holding onto the metal edge of the car door while you get out works great. *Be careful when filling up the car, a static spark is enough to ignite the fumes. I saw a video of a woman straightening her sweater and then grabbing the pump handle - poof! Touch some metal away from the tank first. *If you have been charged, you'll get less of a shock if you let the spark jump from a metal object you're holding. I like to discharge using my keys. Doing this slowly will hurt more, do it casually and you'll not be to focused on the pain of the shock. Antistatic shoes exist, but they are specialty items for electronics workers. It may be possible (I haven't tested) to use some copper wire or alu foil going from inside the shoe to underneath the sole. | ||
