I never thought of being impolite in that area.
Well, it was all just a misunderstanding.

Did you point a finger at something? (I've been told that this is considered rude among certain people.)

Were you on an airplane, or in another mode of transportation?

Did you point a finger at something? (I've been told that this is considered rude among certain people.) No - it's not based on anything I did or didn't do.

Were you on an airplane, or in another mode of transportation? N.R.

To be both specific and general: is it relevant in some specific place or part of some kind of vehicle or during some sort of travel? Like, say, the toilet of a bus/train/plane/boat, or waiting in line to get aboard a bus/train/plane/boat?

Does travel enter into this at all?

Did you read this on a sign? Read it somewhere else? Hear somebody say it? Someone you were talking to? Or a conversation you overheard? An announcement?

Does travel enter into this at all? No. It also works standing still.

Did you read this on a sign? Not exactly a sign. Read it somewhere else? Yes, but don't be misled. Hear somebody say it? Someone you were talking to? Or a conversation you overheard? An announcement? No to all of these.

I'm hoping to get my puzzles solved within the next week or so, as we are having a thundering herd of relatives coming in. So here's a BIG HINT.
The 'place' is on the human body. The puzzle refers to an article of clothing.

My friend Niki, whose grandparents live in Iran, went to visit them when she was about 12. She got arrested when she was out riding her bicycle, because she wasn't dressed properly. Her grandmother went down to the police station and told the guy who was there that her granddaughter was an American, it wasn't her fault she didn't know how to dress properly, and handed him an American $20 dollar bill and he let her go. Something like that?

No law or custom is violated in the owning or wearing of certain garments. Different countries are slightly relevant, but not Iran. Suggestion: identify the garments, then find out why there was a 'misunderstanding'.

underwear? Yes! Now why did I think I had unmannerly underwear?
And what was the 'misunderstanding' that led to this thought?

Please note that nothing was showing that should not have been.

is the word(s) on a label? one word? a phrase?

is it - in its correct meaning - to do with size? colour? washing instructions? the French for that item?

is the item underpants? panties?
(sorry - need to clarify because in England underwear is a generic term for all undergarments)

is the word(s) on a label?yope one word? a phrase? a two-word phrase

is it - in its correct meaning - to do with size? colour? washing instructions? the French for that item? the French phrase for a certain thing - but not the name of the garment itself.

is the item underpants? panties? knickers, yes
(sorry - need to clarify because in England underwear is a generic term for all undergarments)I suppose this phrase could be applied to other ungergarments or even to outergarments; I've just never seen it anywhere else.

Since tomorrow is R-day - when I have a houseful of relatives come in for 5 days - I will go ahead and $poyle this. It seems to be essentially solved anyway.

*********SPOILER***********
When buying some, ahem, intimate garments, I noted on the package that they were described (in French) as 'sans etiquette,' with an accent over the first 'e'. The Spanish wasn't much better: 'sin etiqueta.' As an Anglophone, I associate etiquette with Emily Post, and this seemed to say that I had rude undies! The English part of the package solved the mystery. They are label-free. Seems that tags irritated some people's tender skin.

Thx to Shez, Kaylee & Docd for their participation.
