Two men are walking down the street. As they go around a corner, one of them points to a lamp post, and they both start laughing so hard they almost fall over. "It's a shame," says the first one, "that still, after all this time, I'm just too much of a coward." |

Had the men been at that place before? Back when the first man was a coward? Had something relevant happened with the lamp post before? Back when the first man was a coward? Is there something relevant on the lamp post? Would anyone laugh looking at the lamp post? Or do the men laugh because of their memories? Relevant how much time had passed between the event above and the cowardice of the first man? If so, Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? Decades? Is a bet relevant? A dare? |

Had the men been at that place before? one of them had - the first one Back when the first man was a coward? well, back when he showed an act of cowardism (kinda), yeah Had something relevant happened with the lamp post before? yes Back when the first man was a coward? same answer as above Is there something relevant on the lamp post? not on it, no Would anyone laugh looking at the lamp post? no, anyone else would probably not find it funny at all Or do the men laugh because of their memories? partly, but it's more to it than that Relevant how much time had passed between the event above and the cowardice of the first man? well, yes, kind of If so, Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? it is actually a year and a half, but it would work with any sufficiently long amount of time Decades? Is a bet relevant? no A dare? no Stag parties relevant? no Being chained to a lamp post is a common stag night prank in my part of the world (with clothing optional) fun fact, but alas irrelevant for this puzzle |

Did the two see something related to the lamp post most people would not notice? whether they would notice it or not depends, I guess - it was there fo everyone to see, and not exactly hard to notice - however, most people would not think it was particularly funny Fear of the dark relevant? no |

The item, was it ...a piece of clothing? no ...jewellery? no ...a toy? no ...food/drink? no ...a book, magazine or newspaper? no ...something people use on a day-to-day basis many people do, yes such as a wallet? but not this ...something broken? no, and that is somewhat relevant ...trash? no ...part of a bigger item, such as a car tire? no ...a vehicle, such as a bike? bingo! Was it made of ...plastic? ...metal? ...paper? ...rubber? ...glass? ...wood? ...stone? ...fabric? ...porcelain? now that we have established what the object is, i guess the materials are irrelevant Was it a poster? A photograph? A sticker? so no, none of these The people who wouldn't find it funny, would they find it ...revolting? no, that would be an odd reaction ...sad? i guess some people might react like this ...annoying? and some may find it annoying, i guess ...unremarkable? this would probably be the most common response Is he too much of a coward to take the item? yes To graffiti it? irr. To break a law or regulation in some way? yope So person two had not visited the lamppost before? correct Had person one told him about it? yes |

Is the bike chained/locked to the lamppost? Maybe he locked it there, forgot the combination, and is afraid to break the lock and take it back for fear of looking like a thief? |

Is the bike chained/locked to the lamppost? yes, it is! Maybe he locked it there, forgot the combination, and is afraid to break the lock and take it back for fear of looking like a thief? that's exactly it! (except he lost his key, not the combination) Would the bike be difficult to get? Is a prank relevant? An accident of some sort? no to all I believe that's pretty much everything covered. Anyone like to sum it up? Otherwise I'll $poyle it. |

Has the bike been there for 1 1/2 years? yes, it has! We pretty much have everything now, so I think it's time for a... *******SPOILER******* This is a true story that happened to the brother of a friend of mine. The brother (Noel, our Coward) had been living in Berlin, Germany for a year while studying. While he lived there he parked his bike and locked it to a lamppost. When he returned to get it, he discovered that he had forgotten his key. Afraid that people would think he was a thief, he didn't dare get some clippers and take it, so he left it there. A year and a half later, Noel was back visiting Berlin with his brother (my friend, or Richard in this puzzle). Noel had of course told his brother about the bike he didn't dare take away from Berlin, and as they went around a corner, they burst into laughter as they saw the bike, still there, still chained to the lamppost. And the amazing thing was, after a year and a half in a huge city like Berlin, it was completely untouched! Nobody had stolen a seat or a wheel or anything! However, Noel was still afraid of being seen as a criminal, and so didn't dare reclaim his bike. So for all I know, it might still be there. Thanks for playing, everyone! |
