My Jewish parents used Hanukkah to teach me an interesting lesson that had nothing to do with religion or morality but for which Hanukkah was uniquely suited. What was it?

Are any Hanukkah traditions relevant? Hannukah symbols? Hanukkah food?
Relevant that it's observed 8 days?

Did the lesson concern the joys of gift-giving? The fact that you can't always get what you want?

Did they pose a hypothetical situation based on gift-giving to explain a mathematical point? Is the idea that if you got one present the first day, then two the next, four the next etc you would end up with a surprising number relevant?

********* SPOILER **************
Coins (either real money or goldfoil-wrapped chocolate coins) are a traditional Hanukkah present. My parents gave me a penny on the first night, 2 cents on the second night, four on the third, etc. They pointed out that if the holiday lasted a month, they would be broke long before it was over. This fascinated me -- but it looks as though this puzzle (which was my second puzzle about exponents) was too easy for you.
Check out my new one, which I hope won't be!
