Declan knocks on the door. On the opposite side of the door, Mary dies. Declan killed her, but John's the true villain in this story. (which is based on a short story, early $p0i1ers email. =)) |

If so, the front door to Mary's house? The back door? Any other door? A door in someone else's house? Does Mary actually answer the door? Open it? |

Balin (Balin) I think you meant "No" when I asked if John was alive... You're right, somehow I read that as "is John dead"... Had John been a criminal? Noish. Was Declan a criminal? No. Did Mary murder John? Yes. Kill him accidentally? No. Was this the anniversary of John's death? No. Or some other important occasion? Yope. Shez (Shez) hello back =) was Declan a policeman? No. had he come to inform Mary of John's death? No. did Mary kill John in self-defense? Yesish. had John only just died? the same day? the previous day? No to all, good questions. Redwine (Redwine) If "Is John alive?" is really yes, does Mary know that John is alive? Sorry, I confused you with my typo. But your questions may still help. I'll say yope. Does she think she killed him? Yes, and she's right. Did John threaten Mary to come back as a ghost and haunt her? I don't believe he does in the original story, but he very well could. Does Declan know about all these above? NO. Does Declan play a joke on Mary? Not intentionally. |

My guess would be that death knocks twice and that Mary and John had a prearanged knockiing signal, beieng nefarious crimanals. A deal goes sour and John threatens to kill Mary, who promptly kills John. Declan being a kindly Vacum Salesman with a tic comes to the door and knocks exactly in the right manner to John. Thus Mary thinks John is at the door and drops dead with a heart attack. |

Thank you for your vigilance, Peter. I am back. =) Shez (Shez) had Declan come there looking for John? No. Dwuanos (Dwuanos) My guess would be that death knocks twice and that Mary and John had a prearanged knockiing signal, beieng nefarious crimanals. A deal goes sour and John threatens to kill Mary, who promptly kills John. Declan being a kindly Vacum Salesman with a tic comes to the door and knocks exactly in the right manner to John. Thus Mary thinks John is at the door and drops dead with a heart attack. No, although Mary is mistaking Declan's totally innocent knock for John. ***********RECAP Mary killed John. Declan knows nothing about John or the murder, though he knows Mary and she sort of knows him. She thinks, when Declan knocks on her front door, that he is John's ghost, returned to avenge himself. What's left to find: -How Declan is responsible for her death in more ways than the simple knocking, and -Why Mary thought it was John's ghost at the door (his death wasn't recent) Figure out Declan's profession. |

Did she die of a heart attack? If Mary killed John in self-defense, did he attack her first? Is this what you meant by John being the true villain? Had she been a completely innocent victim of his attack? Or did she provoke it? Relevant? After killing John, did she hide the body, clean up, etc. to avoid getting caught? Are her specific actions after killing John (such as how she hid the body, if she did) relevant? Does Declan know how John died? Is his specific relationship with Mary relevant? If so, professional? friendly? romantic? familial? Had something happened recently that would cause Mary to think that John was coming for her? a dream perhaps? something related to the investigation of his death? Was his death even investigated, for that matter, and is it relevant? Are there any true supernatural elements to this puzzle, such as a ghostly visitor? |

Ciaobella (Ciaobella) Did she die of a heart attack? Yes. If Mary killed John in self-defense, did he attack her first? Close enough for the purposes of this puzzle. Is this what you meant by John being the true villain? This, plus that she died because she thought the knocking was him. Had she been a completely innocent victim of his attack? Or did she provoke it? Relevant? Irr., in the original story he is a cold and verbally abusive husband. After killing John, did she hide the body, clean up, etc. to avoid getting caught? Yes. Are her specific actions after killing John (such as how she hid the body, if she did) relevant? No. I need to remember the name of this short story, because it is a good one. I believe she just poisons him in a way that looks like a heart attack. Does Declan know how John died? No. Is his specific relationship with Mary relevant? Yes. If so, professional? Thisish. friendly? Yes. romantic? Yope, explore. familial? No. Had something happened recently that would cause Mary to think that John was coming for her? YES. a dream perhaps? No. something related to the investigation of his death? No. Was his death even investigated, for that matter, and is it relevant? Irr. Are there any true supernatural elements to this puzzle, such as a ghostly visitor? No. Andy_hornby (Andy_hornby) true supernatural? haha Trupernatural. is the time of day this happens relevant? No. is it a time that Mary wouldn't be expecting someone to knock at the door? Irr, possibly. So Mary never knew it was Declan knocking before she died...does this take place on what I would consider to be a normal street in a normal village/town? Yes. Is the house relatively isolated? Irr. Rbruma (Rbruma) Did she call for Declan to come to her house? No. Did he come there some other time? No. Did she ask for somebody with the same profession as Declan's (but not specifically him) to come? No. If she did ask,did she actually speak to a living person, or did she ask John? No, but wouldn't that make for a creepy story. Is she remorseful about John's death? Possibly, irr. Shez (Shez) was Declan wearing a uniform? No. was he a priest? doctor? soldier? policeman? No to all. |

Shez (Shez) is he the cable man? social worker? phone repair? any sort of repair? undertaker? doctor? No to all. HINT: His work wouldn't ordinarily take her to her door. This has been the closest question so far: Had he been trying to leave hints for Mary in some way - and she had misunderstood this/these and become paranoid that John was coming for her? Yes! |

i'm dying to know the answer to this puzzle... is it relevant where declan left the items for mary? did he leave them outside her house? i'm intrigued by your answer regarding whether they are clothing - are they objects of various shapes? sizes? constituent material? - but do they all contain a common property? In so much that they could be summed up by a single term for the objects? |

Balin (Balin) Did Mary sell them to Declan? Yes. Do the particular objects matter? No. Andy_hornby (Andy_hornby) so mary has pawned these items? Yes. that she owned? that john had bought for her? And declan is giving them back to her as gifts? Yes to all! ************************SPOILER Thanks to everyone for sticking with this one, it was a good group solve! This is from the plot of a short story, the name of which I will post as soon as I rediscover it. Mary decides to kill her husband, who, while being generous in his gifts to her, is neglectful and demeaning. She gets away with it, and, to get by as a widow, happily pawns all the jewelry he gave her. Declan, the pawnbroker, mistakes her for a poor maiden selling her only possessions out of necessity. He naturally falls in love with her. So, one by one, he begins sending her the items she pawned, thinking she will be enchanted by her secret admirer's thoughtfulness. She is actually driven out of her mind with fear, thinking that either someone has discovered her crime, or John's ghost is tormenting her. After the last item is returned, Declan comes over one night and knocks on Mary's door, finally ready to declare his love. In her mad state, she thinks it is John come to kill her and dies of fright. |
