Are they happy because they did something? received something? Were you late to work because you didn't get out the door in time? Because something caused the commute to be longer? Because you had to make a side trip? Because you had to return home? |

Relevant that "they" are all male? Would this puzzle work if "they" were all female? If it was a group of men and women? Do "they" work with you? Did you interact with "them" personally? Did you see "them" during your commute? Specific type of transportation relevant? For example, if you take the bus, could this puzzle work just the same if you drove yourself to work? |

Is the mode of transport your car? train? Did a freak or at least an unusual event occur? I'd imagine a late train is not unusual! They were happy... had they come into money? are they supporters of a particular team? or a team themselves? chess relevant? or any sport, games or passtimes for that matter? Was it their celebrating that caused you to be late? |

* * * SPOILER * * * Peter, So they were a lotto syndicate? Were they transport workers of some sort? or workers on which transport depends? Correct They were a group of bus drivers who had won the lottery. They did not show up for work the next Monday so some people were late for work. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/mar/19/euromillions-lottery-corby-bus-drivers
