When I spent the summer of 2007 in Seoul, South Korea, I stuck out like a sore thumb, but not because I was obviously not Korean. How come??

I'm adopted from Korea, and I speak no Korean at all. Once, I walked into a Korean restaurant, and someone tried to speak Korean to me. It was funny xD.

"Obviously not Korean": Because of the way you dressed? Your behavior? Because you're from the USA and look 'American' (I assume, considering you live in RI)? Because you didn't speak Korean?

Did you speak Korean? Mistakes while speaking it relevant?

In Arabic, 'hamem' is 'pigeon' and 'hammem' is 'bathroom'. Easy to mix them up. Very easy.

In Arabic, 'hamem' is 'pigeon' and 'hammem' is 'bathroom'. Easy to mix them up. Very easy. In French, "les heros"(heroes) is sometimes confused with "les zeros" (mental defectives)

Was it connected to your appearance? Did you not follow a custom that most Koreans do? Not do a particular thing that everyone else did? Do something that nobody else did? Is your job relevant?

I'm not quite sure if this is the best wording, but did you do something that most Americans do, but most Koreans don't? A behavior? A habit?

Balin: Yeah! Funny thing is, we moved to Germany when I was two (my dad was in the Air Force). Since I heard a lot of German, and because I was at that age when you're learning languages, I actually spoke German for a bit. Then we moved back to the U.S. and I forgot all of it D=

Did you wear an accessory that a Korean person wouldn't? Is the color of the item relevant? If so: Primary color? Secondary? Tertiary?

Is the climate of South Korea relevant? Did you find it very hot? Wear fewer clothes than native Korean people?

Did you wear a type of garment that Korean women don't tend to wear? Did you wear something that they would wear, but in a different situation? At a different time of year?

Is any historical event relevant? Something that happened during 2007?

Did you do something that most people in a certain category do, but these people generally do not live in Korea?

Would you have stood out similarly elsewhere in Korea? In Japan? In China?

Would Korean people seeing how you dressed consider you to be overdressed for certain situations? Dressed too informally? Dressed indecently? Dressed impractically? Did you wear something that they would associate with much older people? Much younger people? People of a different social class?

Is a particular item of clothing, or what you wore more generally?

Did you change your dress style when you realised you stuck out?

Were you wearing very traditional clothing,
instead of more modern clothing?Yes!!

****** SPOILER *********

When I was in South Korea, I fell in love with traditional Korean clothing, & acquired a large wardrobe of traditional hats, vests, & jackets, and even two full hanboks. But virtually no one on Korea dresses that way anymore. In Seoul, men wear business suits, women wear Western-style dresses, and college students wear jeans & t-shirts, often with imprinted with English messages! So I was just about the only person in Seoul who looked like a traditional Korean, if you didn't look at my face. Sorry it was so easy, but maybe my next one won't be. Check it out!!
