Violetta thought Partick was a terrible person because she didn't hear the word 'off.' How come?

Was Partick speaking when she didn't hear the word 'off'? Was someone speaking about him? Was the word 'off' actually said? Is it relevant why she didn't hear it?

Is there a relevant word or phrase that changes meaning when 'off' is added? The difference between 'pissed' and 'pissed off' is coming to mind, for example.

Did she think he had done something terrible? That he had said something terrible? That he was a cruel person? An untrustworthy person? Violent? That he had committed a crime?

Did she think he had murdered someone? assaulted someone? stolen something?

Does the relevant phrase have "off" preceded by "went" (i.e. .... went off...)? "ran"? "took/taken"? "hit it"? "made"? "broken"? "blew (it)"? "knocked"?

Is Patrick's occupation relevant?
Is what Patrick was wearing relevant?
Is how Patrick was speaking relevant?

Would you think the same as Violetta if you had heard what Patrick said and did not hear "off"?

*********** SPOILER *************
Clever Hannah returns in triumph!! Patrick, a writer of detective stories, says to a friend, "I have no regrets about killing those tiresome people off." Violetta, not knowing Patrick's profession & not hearing the 'off,' assumes that he is talking about some actual murders he committed.I was afraid this puzzle would get solved right away, & I hope my new one won't be. Check it out at the bottom of the page!!
