No someone who pretended to be someone else? an actor? someone who took care to remain anonymous? The person would most certainly not have been able to rename anonymous |

sport relevant? Yes a competition? Yes war? a fight? was the strong arm used to lift something? push something? Closest to this pull something? No to rest a lever relevant? No Coincidently I only discovered after I posted this puzzle, that the timing could possibly be considered unfortunate. My judgement however is to tread on with it |

arm wrestling? No. Remember, "pushing" was the the closet activity guessed so far, but nobody would actually describe this activity in that way.. they would use another word, the would be much more accurate and applicable. did the major disaster involve death? Yes many people? Yes a war? No |

was the arm used to hold something back? No hit something? someone? Actually in this sport it is used to try to avoid something from coming in contact with something else. |

More Specifically the arm is used to prevent a certain object from coming in to contact with something. Or at least, barring certain strategic situations, that is the goal from the particular player's point of view |

Hint: The sport is baseball, although it could apply to several other sports. Also, a world record would need to be broken, for this event to happen. It is also fair to say that it is physically impossible for a human being to bring about this mayhem. |

Was the ball thrown into space? No Was it thrown fast enough to demolish buildings? Yesish - the ball was not thrown directly at any building Can you please recap the puzzle? Sure, simple enough. A baseball pitcher threw a very fast ball that broke the world record for fastest pitch, and unfortunately the end result wasn't so great. The pitcher, batter, cather, and pretty much the entire stadium audience did not survive, and the stadium itself was probably completely demolished. However, this was a legal pitch, targeted directly at the strike zone. Another hint is if that batter had lived through this ordeal, he would have been entitled to first base. |

So the pitch hit the batter? Did the pitch create a sonic boom, and the shockwave was enough to destroy the stadium? |

Did the catcher catch the ball? No, probably yope would be a better term for the batter being hit as well. I can $poil if you like, be cause you're pretty much OTRT. Otherwise, a HINT would be that this situation is far more extreme then simply breaking the sound barrier. And olse the article that describes this scenario was somewhat beeing funny in declaring that the batter would be awarded first base, because... Any way I'll $poil in a day or unless someone wishes to narrow it down. |

One more hint I guess - this puzzle came from a site that answers questions people ask about bizarre situations. I found it through a mentalfloss link. The answer was fairly humorously worded so I couldn't help posting this puzzle. The speed of the pitched ball is much, much, faster than simply breaking the sound barrier. I mean a _lot_ faster. I'll spoil tomorrow, because it might take some knowledge of nuclear physics at this point to solve this. |

Is the ball going faster than the speed of light? No but close enough for a SPOILER. There is a web site called "What If", "Answering your hypothetical questions with physics, every Tuesday." Someone wrote in: "What would happen if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90% the speed of light?". In a nutshell, the ball would be hitting the air molecules in front of it with such energy that it would cause a nuclear fusion explosion, completely disintegrating the stadium and leveling the surrounding town within a one mile radius. But please read the actual web page for the full description. I thought it was actually very funny! http://what-if.xkcd.com/1/ BTW the author notes at the end that "A careful reading of official Major League Baseball Rule 6.08(b) suggests that in this situation, the batter would be considered "hit by pitch", and would be eligible to advance to first base." |

Glad you liked it. I was trying to top laughing out loud at my desk when I read it. If you click next, there hare several other ones that I thought were good, particularly the "mole of Moles". Hope the site stays around and adds some more questions/answers. |
