I know that I'm not the only teacher on this forum, so some of you also have first-hand experience with the joys of teaching: interesting work and long vacations. But there's one perk of being a teacher that I've never heard mentioned in discussions of this occupation. What is it? |

Would all teachers experience this perk? Is the subject taught relevant? The type of school/college? The age group taught? Does the perk involve material gain? Being able to do something good? Avoiding doing something bad? Feeling good about oneself? The way others respond to you? Relationship with students? |

College professors possibly have this perk? High school? Middle school? Elementery school? Preschool? Law school? Old people adult education school? My mom teaches GED, so her students don't have high school diplomas yet, but they're all adults. Could she have this perk? |

In case it matters, my mom teaches GED at a community college and so she is considered an adjunct faculty there. She also has full access to most of the college's resources. As for new questions ... Would this only apply to teachers in the United States? What about Canada? Europe? If an American teacher goes on some humanitarian project to teach starving children in Africa, could they have this perk? Would an African teacher at the same African school? Does the perk relate to the teachers' students? Students of other teachers at the same school? Students in general? The teachers' families? Do the families benefit in any way from the perk? Do the students? Anybody else? |

Is the perk enhanced by teaching people younger than oneself? Teaching children as opposed to adults? Do you experience this perk only while teaching? Whilst on school grounds? At home? In your free time? Are any of the following relevant in deciding whether a particular teacher would have the perk: Their age? Gender? Hobbies? Interests? Level of education? Where they live/teach? Could a classroom assistant have this perk? Someone who worked in a school but not in a teaching setting? Someone who worked with young people, but not in a school? A parent who home-schooled their child? A private tutor? |

Is there any specific threshold for having the perk vs. not having the perk? Or is it just that more students means more perk? Or fewer students means more perk? And is it really children that matter, or students in general, regardless of age? In case it matters, my mom's GED class has about a dozen students, ranging in age from 19 to 60-something. There are two teachers, including her, and they split the subjects about evenly. There is no teaching assistant. Now can you answer my question, and if so, will you please do so? Also, please say which of the informations I gave you make it more likely to have the perk, which make it less likely, and which are irrelevant. And if any make it impossible/certain to have the perk, please say that too. |

Relevant if it's the same students for the whole term or if they come and go? In my mom's class, they only have to be there for 18 days, or until they pass the practice test, whichever is later. So some student she'll have for years and some she'll have for 18 days. Relevant at all? Also, she teaches five to six hours a day, weekdays only, including one to two hours extra help. Is this relevant at all? |

Tracking the progress of names over time? Seeing what the most common names are? Seeing how some names gain popularity while others lose it? Seeing names that were popular in the past come back into fashion? Seeing how events or popular culture influence naming? Seeing how names from different cultures become used? How new names are created? Do you get to learn new unusual names from your students? That you then use in your puzzles...? |
