When I heard Brisen say that Elaine was so sensitive about being Jewish that you had to be careful not to glerk in her presence, I knew that Brisen was wrong, even though I knew nothing about Elaine and little about Judaism (since, as old forum hands may recall, I opted out of Judaism when I was 12). How come? (In case this puzzle sounds familiar, it's a revised version of one I posed recently but had removed because it was poorly formulated.) |

Did Brisen have a scrund? About Jews? About glerking? Is glerking something Brisen expected Jews to dislike? Disapprove? Remind them of something? Fear? Become embarrassed? |

Does glerking (as Brisen envisioned it) have to do with something stereotypically Jewish? Or something associated with Jews (such as the Holocaust)? Is glerking really something to do with something stereotypically Jewish? Or something associated with Jews? Was Brisen wrong about glerking in Elaine's presence (ie, was Elaine not so sensitive)? Or was Brisen wrong about what glerking would mean to Elaine? Does glerking involve talking about something? Politics relevant? History? Economics? |

Did you know he was wrong because it would be impossible to glerk in front of Elaine? Because nobody could possibly be offended by glerking? Because he believed glerking to have some significance that it does not actually have? To be offensive in a way that it is not? Did he not know what glerking really meant? Is the actual word that glerking has replaced here relevant? (eg the real word for the action of glerking might sound like something else) |

Is glerking impossible full stop? Is it a made-up word? Did he use the wrong word? Would it be impossible for Brisen in particular to do? Would it be impossible to do in front of someone? In front of Elaine specifically? Would Elaine not be aware that someone was glerking in her presence? |

Sorry, I wasn't at all clear! What I was trying to ask was whether the word Brisen used to describe glerking was in fact not a real word, ie he had misremembered or mispronounced a word. Is glerking expressed in a figurative way, but would be impossible literally? Does Brisen actually believe that people can glerk? Is he being careless with his speech? Exaggerating for effect? Using figurative language? If you were to correct Brisen, would he believe you were being overly pedantic? |

I checked out of curiosity when I posted my question, and according to an online scrabble dictionary it is allowed but with the meaning 'obsolete offensive word for haggle/ a haggler'. So depending on his knowledge of obsolete insults, maybe that's why he got offended :p |

Do you mean as in the disgusting expression,'jew him down'? Thanks, that's a good objection. But the book that reported this (Mixed Blessings by Paul Cowan) did capitalize the word 'Jew" when saying what you couldn't use when playing Scrabble with Lippmann. Besides, you don't have to be sensitive about being Jewish to be offended by 'jew' in the haggle sense; like the "n word" it would offend any decent person. |

Could you use "jewish" which is an adjective, not a noun? Theoretical, of course, since I never get 5 letters at a time that spell any word. |

But the adjective form is derived from a proper noun and should be capitalized ("Jewish"), right--in the same way that English is just as "proper" as England is? |

But what about putting 'english' on a ball - would that be capitalized? Good thing Scrabble is usually played by at least semi-intellectual types, or it would result in fistfights much more often! |

As far as I now, the adjectives "Jewish' and "English' are always capitalized. The adjective 'Catholic' isn't always capitalized, but when it isn't, it has a different meaning (not pertaining specifically to the religion or its followers). |

So is "glerking" "playing a proper noun" or "playing the word JEW"? Also, according to Dictionary.com, putting English on a ball is "sometimes lowercase." Not sure how the Scrabble dictionary addresses that. |

Scrabble lets you use "english" but not, for example, "Spanish" (at least, the dictionary on the Scrabble FB app does). I'm not sure if "english" is allowed because of the ball thing or because of things like english muffins. Although everything I can find capitalizes the "E" in English muffins, too. So who knows. |
