Is this a product that happpens to named in a way that sounds like a man's name?

Is it only you that would refer to this object as "he

Does the object "speak", in the sense that it outputs a synthesised or recorded voice from a built-in speaker?

Is this object mass-produced? If so, if an other person had essentially the same type of object, would this person also refer to it as "he"?

Are languages relevant? The US English language is somewhat different than European languages, in that we don't assign a gender to objects - instead we use "its". Is this fact relevant?

Is this a product that happpens to named in a way that sounds like a man's name? yesish. Most people, upon hearing the name of this product, would not think of a man's name, but I did.

Is it only you that would refer to this object as "he Actually, I wouldn't refer to the object as "he." Nor would anyone else. You are welcome to call it "it" rather than "he." It would certainly make it easier for me to answer everyone's questions!

I have a feeling it would be helpful to pin down what this product is. =)

It isn't an electronic gadget, right? Does it have any obvious moving parts? Can it move without being touched? Or to be more precise, can it continue to move on its own after having been activated? Would we hold it in our hand while using it? If so, would we tend to hold it in our dominant hand? non-dominant hand? Is it usually a specific colour?
Is it made of metal? plastic? paper? wood? cloth? glass?

Would one use it:
To assist in one's physical wellbeing? (ie. brushing one's teeth, cleaning one's ears etc)
To beautify oneself?
To clean one's surroundings?
As part of a hobby?
To use with a pet?
To use in a car?
To use with children?
To use with the garden?
For exercise?
For exercise of the mind?

According to some one of the central messages of Cosmo for many years was that woman should use their feminine charms to snare a man with lots of money, marry him and enjoy a life of luxury. This brought them into conflict with feminist groups, any of this relevant?

RECAP:

For at least a decade and a half, I thought a HAM named Cosmo was a jerk. As you now no, Cosmo was not a man at all, it was the magazine Cosmo instead! What a scrund! What you have left to discover is the context of this scrund.

From here on out, all references to "he" or "him" will be assumed to refer to Cosmo the supposed man.

What you know:
-Cosmo-HAM's supposed jerkiness had nothing to do with the magazine's history of encouraging women to use their feminine charms to lure men or with its blatant mysogeny.
-It had to do with something he/it did (yope-ishly) and with something I heard about him/it.
-The pictures in the magazine are somewhat relevant.
-It is relevant that I had the scrund for at least a decade and a half, although I could have had the scrund for just one year, too.

I've never read Cosmo...this puzzle is too hard for me. xD Oh well, it's entertaining reading!! I've never read it either! Having read Cosmo will neither help nor hinder your efforts at this puzzle, as long as you have some idea of the type of magazine it is. Hang in there!

Are the articles published relevant? see note below Any of the following themes relevant, whether in articles or photos:
Fashion
Beauty this one
Sex
Love/relationships
Career advice
none of the others

Are the pictures used to illustrate articles relevant? see note below Adverts relevant? no Models featured relevant? see note below

Did you think he was a jerk because of an attitude he held? yes Because of how he acted? yope Towards women? yesish

I'm not sure how to answer some of the questions above with yes/no answers without being misleading. There is something about the articles, pictures, and models in Cosmo that relates in a general way to the scrund. But let me say this: if you only focus on the magazine, you will never solve this puzzle.

HINT: stop thinking about the magazine entirely and go back to the original puzzle statement, when you thought he was HAM (after all, I did!).

Also, revisit this updated recap. There are at least two good starting points for new question themes in here! Please don't give up.

-----
Updated RECAP:
For at least a decade and a half, I thought a HAM named Cosmo was a jerk. As you now know, Cosmo was not a man at all, it was the magazine Cosmo instead! But why did I think Cosmo was a he, and why did I think he was a jerk?

What you know:
-Cosmo's supposed jerkiness had something to do with "bigger" women (in Kaylee's words =)).

Things that are relevant:
- Something he did (yopishly)
- Something I heard about him
- The fact that I had the scrund for at least a decade and a half

Is your age relevant? Only in that I was young enough when I formed the scrund that I hadn't even heard of Cosmo (the magazine), which makes my scrund more understandable. But I maintained the scrund long after I became aware of Cosmo.

Was it only when you hit a particular age (after a decade and a half from time of hearing about what Cosmo the HAM did) that the scrund became apparent? no, but keep pursuing this angle (the length of time).

I will also say that no particular occurrence or milestone made my scrund apparent. It simply dawned on me one day out of the blue.

No to all. As I sad, there was no particular reason for my scrund to be come apparent, it just did one day, out of the blue. I did not "grow out of it," or anything like that. In other words, me getting over the scrund is completely irrelevant.

did you hear about Cosmo through advertising? no was the scrund based on a strap line or slogan? no

(and P.S. I'm a woman...my username is pronounced "No-El" not "Noll"...I had no idea the male name Noel existed when I picked the name. Actually, I guess I had heard of the Noel from Oasis, but I had no idea it was spelled that way until LTPFers pointed it out to me. Most female Noel's I have met spell it this way, but if I had known there was also a male's name with the same spelling, I would have used the alternate Noelle. Noelle is actually more accurate, as it's the feminine form in french, but I haven't encountered many Noelle's in real life so the spelling looks odd to me. The internet tells me that Noelle is slightly more popular than Noel, but that both are acceptable spellings of the woman's name pronounced "No-eL". Ok, end rambling.)

HINT:
The two "good starting points" I referenced in my previous recap are these:
(1) I thought he was a jerk because of something I *heard about him.*
(2) I had the scrund for at least 15 years.

I'm not sure why this puzzle keeps stalling out, or why no one wants to jump in on these two big hints (except Jumpingjack and Shez on Sept 2 -- thank you). To me, they are both just screaming for some basic, standard LTPF questions (but maybe they look different when you're not the host?). You are welcome to continue taking random stabs in the dark as to why Cosmo was a jerk, but I promise you that if you figure out where these two starting points are headed, random stabs in the dark about the nature of his jerkiness won't be necessary.

Indeed, my puzzle has stalled too! I think I may have to give some hints...

Anyway, I think what confuses me is that your having the scrund for at least fifteen years is relevant, yet your moment of 'unscrunding' is not. I must be looking at this the wrong way... *thinks harder*

Was it a radio advert you heard? Or a radio show host talking about Cosmo? If the latter, did s/he say anything else during the fifteen years that was relevant?

You had the scrund for fifteen years, but it could have been ten, right? Could it have been nine? Some kind of Cosmo anniversary relevant?

When you describe your moment of unscrunding as 'it came to me out of the blue', do you mean that you suddenly realised that the 'Cosmo' in the song was the magazine, and not a man?
But you mentioned that you maintained the scrund even after you found out that Cosmo was a magazine, right? So did you still think that the singer was actually singing about 'Cosmo', the man? Or did you just not think about it at all?

You mention that you heard the song when you were quite young. Did you hear the song again at any relevant time?

Your scrund remained even after you became aware that Cosmo was a magazine, yet there was no way you could have maintained the scrund for more than twenty years. This means that there is another factor involved. Something, in addition to you finding out that Cosmo was a magazine, had to have happened. However, this thing did not give you a sudden revelation, since there was no particular trigger that led to your moment of unscrunding. Is this line of thinking correct?

"Cosmo says you're fat"?!?! YES!!!!

When you describe your moment of unscrunding as 'it came to me out of the blue', do you mean that you suddenly realised that the 'Cosmo' in the song was the magazine, and not a man? yes
But you mentioned that you maintained the scrund even after you found out that Cosmo was a magazine, right? right, so when I was younger and first heard the song and formed the scrund, it was logical for me to do so because I had no idea there was a magazine called Cosmo. But after I heard of the magazine, I still maintained the scrund for YEARS. So did you still think that the singer was actually singing about 'Cosmo', the man?yes, I still did Or did you just not think about it at all?

You mention that you heard the song when you were quite young. Did you hear the song again at any relevant time?

Your scrund remained even after you became aware that Cosmo was a magazine, yet there was no way you could have maintained the scrund for more than twenty years. because the song came out in 1992 This means that there is another factor involved. Something, in addition to you finding out that Cosmo was a magazine, had to have happened. However, this thing did not give you a sudden revelation, since there was no particular trigger that led to your moment of unscrunding. Is this line of thinking correct?

****SPOILER****
The song "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot is a song about women with big butts (and how much the singer likes them), and contains the lines, "Cosmo says you're fat, well I ain't down with that." From the time I first heard the song, I assumed Cosmo was a man, telling a large-bottomed woman (you know, a girl with an "itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face..." =) ) that she was fat just because she had a large butt. What a jerk! It wasn't until sometime in the last few years that it dawned on me that the song was referring to the unrealistic beauty standards set forth in the pictures and articles in Cosmopolitan, the magazine, and that there was no man named Cosmo at all!

Aside: Something about the wording always made me picture Cosmo as a verbally abusive boyfriend constantly telling her she was fat, as opposed to some guy randomly telling some girl she was fat, but really, he'd be a jerk either way. Also, I can remember puzzling over the choice of the name Cosmo, and thinking it was a really strange name to use in the song.

Congrats Jumpingjack! Thank you to everyone who participated, and especially to Shez and Jumpingjack who stuck with it at the end. This was a hard puzzle.

For some odd reason, I had this song stuck in my head for like two days before I posted this puzzle.

Hooray!!! Wow, when it dawned on me, it was as if the sky had burst open and confetti was raining down... =D

I'll admit that I didn't understand the significance of 'it couldn't have been more than twenty years' until now. I was looking at it from completely the wrong angle, thinking that there MUST have been something that happened after twenty years that made you unscrund. Not realising that the scrund couldn't have lasted for more than twenty years because you couldn't have obtained the scrund more than twenty years ago!

Thanks for the puzzle, Noel, it was great fun. =)
