I'm testing the water here with this mainly to see if it requires lateral thought but all going well this might turn into a new puzzle type for us. This one is fairly easy but I'm sure you could come up with more obscure ones

Browsing on-line last night I found a 96. I'm guessing that this must be a world record. I haven't checked this out in any detail so it may not be, but I'd be amazed if there's a verified case of this been surpassed.

So lets play 'Guess the World Record'

Could you put a physical unit close to this 96?

If so:
Meter (and all multiples/submultiples)?
Grams (ditto)?
Seconds?
Liters?

Or is it just a counter? (i.e. a particular event occurred 96 times)

A position in some standings?

Yeah :-)

Long shot: is that the oldest reported age of a given animal?

More generally speaking, does the record concern a human being? Male or female? An animal? A plant?

Or no particular human being is concerned? (i.e. years between 2 particular events...)

Did the woman in question do something relevant at the age of 96? Do something for the first time? Was she (probably) the oldest person to do a certain thing?

The oldest age for a woman to conceive or give birth?

I think this kind of puzzle is a great idea. I didn't google, but I wonder if it would be worthwhile to ban google for this type of puzzle. If it's some unusual number, it might be easy to find the answer. Although of course if I did that I would stay out of the puzzle.

Thanks I'm glad you like it, i'm hoping others come up with stuff so obscure as to make google redundant.

Did something happen to her at age 96? Did anything at all relevant happen when she was at this age? Does 96 refer to an age? Is it relevant how long she lived? Did she die at age 96? Is she currently 96? Is she still alive?

Is there something else relevant about the woman we should be finding out?

Could she be described as 'the oldest X'? 'The oldest living X' (when she was alive obviously? 'The oldest survivor of x'?

Did she live through a particular historical event?

Or is she perhaps the youngest to do something? Eg the youngest to have experienced two different events?

When she turned 97, did the record then increase to 97? Or was it still 96?

Could she be described as 'the oldest X'? Yes 'The oldest living X' (when she was alive obviously? and this too i guess but I'd need to know what difference you see in those two 'The oldest survivor of x'? No

Did she live through a particular historical event? Probably many but none that are relevant

Or is she perhaps the youngest to do something? Eg the youngest to have experienced two different events? No to both

When she turned 97, did the record then increase to 97? No Or was it still 96? It stayed at 96

The difference as I see it - 'the oldest x' would mean the oldest ever. So if for example she was the oldest living gymnast, that would mean that there may have been gymnasts older than 96 in the past but they are now dead, and no current gymnast is older than 96.

Is it relevant in what year she was 96? What year she was born? What year she died?

Did she become famous in some way at age 96? Is her family relevant? Where she lives? Things that happened to her when she was younger? Any jobs she may have had? Hobbies?

Relevant that she lived past 100? Relevant that she lived 5 more years after breaking this record? Did she break the record at the age of 96, or could this only be established later? After her death? Illness relevant?

So if for example she was the oldest living gymnast, that would mean that there may have been gymnasts older than 96 in the past but they are now dead, and no current gymnast is older than 96. I see, as i've been unable to ascertain whether this is in fact a world record I'm not sure. Suffice to say it's highly likely that she would have been the oldest x and probable that she was the oldest ever. This will make sense when you see the solution

Is it relevant in what year she was 96? What year she was born? What year she died? No to all

Did she become famous in some way at age 96? No Is her family relevant? Yes Where she lives? No Things that happened to her when she was younger? Any jobs she may have had? Hobbies? No to rest

Relevant that she lived past 100? No Relevant that she lived 5 more years after breaking this record? No Did she break the record at the age of 96, or could this only be established later? If indeed it is a record, It could be established at the time After her death? No Illness relevant? No

Did she learn how to do something at age 96? No

*************Spoiler******************

Well done Enjay

I did warn you that I was unsure whether this was an actual world record but I'd be surprised if it isn't .

I was reading the wiki entry for
Sarah Knauss who holds the record as the oldest American ever living to the ripe old age of 119, and was struck by the fact that Sarah's daughter Kathyrn was 96 when her mother died. I can't for the life of me imagine that an older person with a living parent has ever existed. I mean even if your parent had you when they were 16 not only would they have to live until 113 but you would have to live to 97 to break the record. Does anyone know of a verified older example.

I find longevity very interesting so this leaped out at me as a potential puzzle.

I hope you enjoyed this first effort and if you did why don't you think of an obscure record and post it here as a puzzle

See ya
