In a remote city, I encountered a situation that can be described as "bad" for a number of reasons. However, in the end, I was lucky No animals, humans or aliens have been hurt in the process :- ) |

Did the situation concern also other people? Could you have encountered the similar situation in the rural area? Did you know from the beginning that you were lucky? Is the reason of your presence in the remote city relevant? |

"Remote," I assume, means remote from where you live? would I also consider it remote? would, say, Peter? somewhere like Timbuktu? somewhere exotic, where few Americans/Europeans have been? Did you speak the language there? |

Not this remote somewhere exotic, where few Americans/Europeans have been? No Did you speak the language there? Yes. To save you the trouble, forget the "remote" part, it was just to set the actual story in the place where it happened. It was in Rome.

Did something happen to you during the time you had left the laptop behind which would have affected your computer if you had had it? For instance robbery? Bag snatching? Fall accident which might have damaged your computer? Fire in your hotel room or elsewhere where you might have put your laptop? Lost some items in river Tevere? Your paraphernalia run over by a car? Something happened to your travel bags when flying from Rome to someplace else? Damage to your luggage? Missing luggage? Possible theft by ground handling personnel at the airport service? A little RECAP "In a remote city, I encountered a situation that can be described as "bad" for a number of reasons. However, in the end, I was lucky" The situation happened while visiting Rome. While there, I forgot my laptop in a company, and I was due to leave first thing next morning. I also needed the laptop as soon as arriving home, for a professional reason, the nature of which is irrelevant. If something 'bad' (and funny, in the end) wouldn't have happened, I probably wouldn't have be able to recover it in due time, and I would have had to go without it. It was not in danger of being lost or damaged, but by the time I would have received it, it would have been too late for the task I was supposed to do upon arriving Another person (H/A/M) was involved between 'losing' my laptop and retrieving it.

Did the beggar carry a laptop bag? No, but...!!Did he have a shirt with a text "mind your belongings"? Did he wear something with a logo of any hardware of software company? Random shot in the dark: Was the beggar eating/carrying an apple? And you have an Apple laptop? No to the rest, but in the right forest. Think simpler. No symbols were involved. |

Or a cellphone? Something else worth a lot of money? Something that reminded you of the laptop? Something that can be connected to a laptop? Something useful to the beggar? |

Did he carry a laptop? Indeed he did! ******* SPOILER ******* While going home after a meeting in a small company, I left my laptop there. On my way to the bus station, together with my wife, I was (verbally) assaulted by a drunkard in the street, who demanded money "to buy another beer". I managed to get on, but upon arriving at the bus station, I suddenly realized something. My wife asked me what it is all about, and I couldn't nail it.. But something in this guy reminded me of something. And then I realized. He was carrying a laptop! I instructed my wife to stay there, I ran back to the company (almost pushing to the ground the "bad guy" in my feat), and proudly came back with my laptop. I thanked the guy (who by the time didn't know what to believe) and I bought him a beer -- so all ended well. If he didn't have a laptop with him, I would have probably realised my 'loss' the next morning, when it would have been way too late. Thanks to all who participated and to Doriana for the final solve. And yes, I enjoyed a beer myself, after the event. : - )
