Is Professor Windeddle really a professor? At a university? Other kind of school? Is Windeddle male? Relevant? Is Dave a student? Who took a class with Windeddle? A regular class at Professor Windeddle's school? Is Dave male? Relevant? A grade: In an exam? If so: written? oral? practical? Or rather for a presentation? Or a more general grade for overall performance in a course? Did Dave's friends think Dave's grade was better than he deserved? Worse? Did they think that cheating was going on? Did Windeddle have a relevant reason to want Dave to do well? Did Dave bribe him? Blackmail him? Did Windeddle feel that Dave doing badly would reflect badly on himself as a teacher? Did he like Dave and want him to do well? Did Dave take the exam as normal, and then Windeddle marked it unfairly highly? Or did Dave cheat on the exam itself? If so, with Windeddle's help? Did Windeddle let him know beforehand what was in the exam? Give him answers during the exam? Did the friends take the same exam? Did windeddle grade the test in a way other than subject knowledge? No, but.... Did Dave's friends get the grades they deserved? Considering that Prof. W. was known as 'the academic equivalent of Admiral Bligh,' yes. Did Windeddle write part of the exam? Proofread it? No **********SPOILER*********** This is based on one of Isaac Asimov's Black Widower stories, "Ph as in Phony." Dave was of average intelligence, or slightly above, but lazy. His friends were amazed and amused when he decided to go for an advanced degree. Stung, he bet them he would take Windeddle's course, ace it, and get the professor to recommend him for the post-grad course. His friends were sure he would cheat, and watched him like a hawk in the days before finals, and it seemed that there was no way he could have done so. Years later, one of his classmates told the Widowers of his puzzlement. Their waiter, who was the smartest person in the room, asked a few astute questions, discovering that Prof. W. had given a final exam based on mistakes that various students had made. This was something he had never done before. Dave had bribed the professor into letting him (Dave) provide the questions, and all he had to do was memorize those Q & A's. Shoot, I didn't think this would be that easy! In any case, if you haven't read any of the Black Widowers books, I recommend you do so ASAP. |
