Although - or should I say because? - I have no idea who they are, I sent them an e-mail today. What's going on? "they" refers to only one person, "he/she". |

Relevant how or where you found the email address? Was it presented in an intentionally mysterious way? Such as written on a dollar bill you received? Or was it written on something someone seemed to have lost? Did you contact them in order to let them know you'd found something? |

Did they contact you in any way before you sent the email? Did you see their email address written somewhere? Did you hear of it from someone? Did you write the email without having come across the email address previously? Did the email say, in effect, "who are you"? Did the email hope to achieve more than just finding out who they are? Had they done something to annoy you? Anger you? Arouse your curiosity? Had you come across them in some way before sending the email? |

That's exactly what I was thinking, Enjay, because I've done it before... Were you writing to one person? An organization? A company? A machine? Did you know? Did you expect a certain response? Hope for a certain response? Were you seeing if you would get any response at all? Your email asked "who are you?"--might they respond with a name? A mission statement? |

The way my university email service works is that when you start entering an email address, it suggests email addresses, so you can email anyone in the university without having previously known their address. Is something like this relevant? |

That's pretty cool, but I guess it wouldn't be possible here in Germany because we have very strict data/privacy protection rules Is something like this relevant? so, no |

Your name is probably similar to theirs...are you basing this guess on their email address? By comparing their email address to yours? Based on something more? My university emails involve your 'username', which is a string of letters and numbers generated based on your name, subject studied and year of arrival. Anything like this relevant? |

Why would I do that in the first place? My university emails involve your 'username', which is a string of letters and numbers generated based on your name, subject studied and year of arrival. Anything like this relevant? somewhat. Our first has an s for student, then the department number and then parts of your name, but only the name parts are relevant to the puzzle |

Is it something like: normally the addresses use the first three letters of your name, but yours uses the last three letters, so you predict there must be someone with the same first three letters as you who took your email address first? Could you predict this email address solely based on yours? Is there anything different about yours compared to the standard way of formatting? |

YES! Could you predict this email address solely based on yours? yes Is there anything different about yours compared to the standard way of formatting? yes - This is enough for me to declare the ********SPOILER******** Our university e-mail addresses usually use the first two letters of one's first name and the first four letters of one's last name. Mine, however, uses the first and the last letter of my first name, so I figured that there must be someone whose name is very similar to mine. Being the curious person that I am, I wrote them an e-mail in order know who exactly they are, but they never replied... Nice second solve in a row, Enjay! |
