For quite some time, I had an active scrund about the spelling and origin of a word. According to dictionary.com, the misspelling is rather common, but I'm not sure if anyone else has been confused about the origin.

May we refer to the spelling and origin you believed it to be as scrundword (i.e. we can pretend it exists and has that origin)? and refer to the correct spelling and origin as trueword?

Presumably, scrundword and trueword are then homophones? and you did not mistake the meaning?

Is scrundword an acceptable variant spelling? a real English word, perhaps with a different meaning (to the best of your knowledge), British or American?

Is trueword spelt the same in both British and American English? does it have any accepted variants? other than, potentially, scrundword?

Clarification: "does the verb require an object"--were you interpreting that as the action referred to BY the verb not requiring a material object? or did you understand it in the linguistic sense (i.e., whether the verb is transitive or intransitive)?

Does the scrundword contain another word within it? that you thought was related?
As an example, many people think that the word "sacrilegious" is actually "sacreligious" and comes from the word "religious".

Whirligig

A bit off topic but something weird happened when I was archiving one of your solved puzzles and the puzzle name seems to have vanished.

It was the long running one about the composer Gounod and is in the Feb 2013 solved puzzles. Can you let me know the puzzle title and I'll add it in.

Thanks

Peter

Peter365: the puzzle in question is "Let it be?" It seems the puzzle has actually been split into two threads, one with the messages but no title and the other with the title but no messages.
