A bank is robbed at gunpoint, and the security cameras show that the robbery occurred Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Jake is convicted of the crime, even though he was able to prove through numerous eyewitnesses that he was in a completely different place at that time and date.

For starters, is Jake human?
And is the bank a typical financial institution?
Does time era matter in this puzzle? Location? Ages of the characters?
Is anyone else directly relevant besides Jake and the 'numerous eyewitnesses'?
Any witness particularly relevant?

For starters, is Jake human? Yes
And is the bank a typical financial institution? Yes
Does time era matter in this puzzle? Not terribly. Modern enough for security cameras.
Location? Yes, though it could be numerous places.
Ages of the characters? No
Is anyone else directly relevant besides Jake and the 'numerous eyewitnesses'? No
Any witness particularly relevant? Nope

Was he convicted for a hand in the robbery? For actually carrying out the robbery?

Did Jake actually do the crime?
Did the crime really occur at 3:00 pm on the Tuesday?
Was he really somewhere else at 3:00 pm on the Tuesday?

***** SPOILER *****

A bank is robbed at gunpoint, and the security cameras show that the robbery occurred Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Jake is convicted of the crime, even though he was able to prove through numerous eyewitnesses that he was in a completely different place at that time and date.

Jake robbed the bank at 3.00 p.m. on Tuesday on the western border of the U.S. state of Georgia. He then travelled across the border into Alabama, where the time zone differs by one hour. He arrived at shortly past 2:00 p.m. local time, and was seen by numerous witnesses at 3:00 p.m.

Thank you all for playing, and nice work getting this case cracked quickly. Investigators are still befuddled as to why someone would travel intentionally to Alabama, but this is beyond even the LTPF's scope.

I've looked at the "Time" map of the States a few times and wondered what it must be like to be a cross country driver with the various time differentials. Good puzzle.

Ooh! Got it! It's the fastest way to get from Atlanta to New Orleans.

I've done it, Boroean. It's not fun.;) Until you get to your western destination and realize you have a few more hours to waste. It must be hell going the other way.

I had a flight once that took off from Cleveland (where I live, Eastern Time) and connected a short distance away, I think it was in Indianapolis. My plane landed about ten minutes before it had taken off. Then my next flight was another short hop west to a small airport, where I again landed shortly before I departed.

Later when I called my wife, she asked me why I didn't call when I landed at my final stop to let her know I was there safe and sound, and I explained that since I landed in 2 cities before I had left, I was afraid some terrible space-time disturbance would occur if I called home and happened to answer the phone myself. She correctly assumed that I had stopped off at the airport bar.

You have to be careful travelling between these time zones, just like Stucco is saying. Too much of that time jumping makes you feel like you're in the "Nexus of the Universe" (like Kramer from "Seinfeld" when he found himself at the intersection of 1st Street and 1st Street).

Good puzzle!

And then, to complicate things, there are states that don't go into daylight saving time (Arizona and I think Indiana, maybe Hawaii?), so part of the year they might be an hour different from the next time zone but the rest of the year they match. At least it's only a maximum three-hour difference for the continental states.
