Wherever did you come across a picture of Fred's aunt bashing a tortoise with a rock? Betwixt a rock and a person's lap? No matter how good your armor, there might be someone bigger than you with a rock out there somewhere? |

Wherever did you come across a picture of Fred's aunt bashing a tortoise with a rock? I gave it to him to frighten the children with. ;) Is the relevant moral, "Even those who have a tough exterior also possess a soft underbelly?" |

It appears so No matter how good your armor, there might be someone bigger than you with a rock out there somewhere? I like it (but it's not the one Bear in mind that there are two creatures in the "lap" |

The illustration is represents an ethic proverb. The drawing is rather basic. You need to discover Exactly what is happening in the picture and then work out what the adage might be. We know there are two creatures the "lap" and one is a turtle. The boy is holding a stone and is bashing the shell of the turtle. |

RECAP This illustration represents an "adage" familiar to a certain indiginous people. The boy is holding a turtle and "bashing" it with a rock. He also holds another shelled creature in his lap. Try to work out exactly what is happening and then see if you can arrive at some sort of "saying" |

Is the boy being foolish in any way? Are we supposed to follow his example? Or not do what he does? Relevant that both creatures have shells? Is he planning to bash the other one as well? |

Is the boy being foolish in any way? Naive rather than foolish Are we supposed to follow his example? No Or not do what he does? Right Relevant that both creatures have shells? Yes Is he planning to bash the other one as well? Yes (or he might already have done so or he might choose it as an alternative) Good questions |

Is the idea that there's a better way to get the creatures open? Or another way to get at what's inside rather than bashing 'em? Or that life's too short to be going around bashing on shells with rocks when you could be gnawing a yam? |

Is the idea that there's a better way to get the creatures open? Noish Or another way to get at what's inside rather than bashing 'em? Noish Or that life's too short to be going around bashing on shells with rocks when you could be gnawing a yam? Not exactly but getting warmer Hint: Consider that there are two different creatures that can get a bashing here |

***************** SPOILER ******************** The picture represents an Akan (African) proverb. The proverb says “Akodaa bo nwa ommo akyekyedee.” The literal translation: “The child is capable of splitting open the snail, not the tortoise.” The underlying message is, one must be given the task within his/her ability. Or, one should recognize one's limitations before embarking any task.
As Ixoye correctly pointed out I posted an Akan Proverb about 2 years ago. Here is another one. I find it interesting to compare proverbs like this with any proverbs or principles that we may be more familiar with. I can think of two Biblical principles that are linked, somewhat. Can you think of anything more closely related to this Akan Proverb? Luke 14: 28-30 Conveys the idea that we should count the cost before embarking on a project to assess if we have the necessary resources to complete it. Galatians 6: 4-5 Tells us to not compare our ability with that of others but to focus on our own ability and responsibilities. |
