In the middle of reading a document, a strange student called dryman suddenly stopped, stuck both hands out in the air and twitched them vigorously, then picked up the manuscript and continued to read. What, besides his inherent strangeness, could explain such bizarre behavior?

Does he simply do this every ten minutes as a matter of course? :)

Is anyone else involved? Did something he read make him do this? Something he saw? Heard? Felt?

Location relevant?

Did he do this to see if something was true? For a medical reason? Is he reading something about the brain? Muscles? Reflexes?

So the general subject of the document is irrelevant? Did one paragraph cause him to do this? One sentence? One word?

Wild guess: Is he imitating playing a piano or other instrument?

Was he observing something about his hands? Will this action help him understand the document? Could he have gone on reading without doing it?

If one were watching this student, would one immediately understand what he was doing?

Will the action help him understand the particular word? Is it's place on the page relevant?

Wild guess #2: Is he imitating typing?

Let's hope so.
Has he found a typo and is trying to find out what the real word should be?

Has he found a typo and is trying to find out what the real word should be? close enough!

*** SPOILER ***
While reading, I came across an unfamiliar word that was similar to one I already knew. I unconsciously "typed" the word in the air to see if it was a probable typo of the known one.

that was fast! by the way I put a question on your junk puzzle.
