did you ask if she had been born as a 'member' of her denomination? no

it seems that being a 'catholic' wouldn't work for this puzzle - is that correct? yes do you mean
Roman catholicism? yes if so - the relevant feature of this denomination - its attitude to
contraception? no its attitude to the priesthood? yes its attitude to Mary? no

is the fact that RC priests do not marry relevant to the fact that RC wouldn't work in this puzzle? or the fact that RC priests are all male?

is one of her parents a minister? mother? father? relevant?

Did you express an opinion that her parents were apostates because you thought it was illegal for clergy of the religion in question to marry and/or have children?

Did you ask something to the effect whether she was "genetically predetermined" to that religion? or, rather, did she take your question whether she was allowed to chose her religion as offensive against the parents? (as if a church minister was not able to bring up his daughter in the spirit of his own religion)

so you asked something about her? about her childhood? about her religion? and this was felt to be offensive? because one of her parents was a minister?

or was the question only asked because one of her parents was a minister?

did you seem to imply that the minister parent put their vocation before her wellbeing?

I think I might need some help - is there one particular question that we should really be trying to answer here?

Did you imply (whether intentionally or not) that one of her parents being a minister would've/should've/might've caused her to choose a different religion?

Or did you maybe imply that she was a...a...an OW*?

an OW, indeed :)

Recast the following, using your skill and judgement:

When Father and Mom got quite plastered,
And their shame had been thoroughly mastered,
They told their son Harry,
"We never did marry,
But don't tell the neighbours, you OW."

Did you ask whether the parent became a minister after marriage? after your friend was born?
Was your question at all about the parent who is a minister?
Did you ask whether the other parent is a minister as well? whether the parents are married? whether ministers are allowed to marry?
Did your friend take your question as offensive against herself? against the parent who is a minister? against the other parent? against both parents?

Hmmm...maybe "bar steward?" That fits, I think.

Did you ask if she was adopted?

Patrilineal vs. matrilineal relevant? Did you ask if she attended services as a child? Continued to attend them?

Did you imply that her parental unit might've seemed less "holy" to someone who lived with said parental unit?

Did you know that her parent is a minister when you asked the question? Maybe, you asked whether her parents had taken her to the workplace when she was a child?

Did you ask if she attended her parental unit's services in particular? If she attended Sunday school/catechism class etc.? If she enjoyed attending services? Wanted to go to services despite having a minister in the house? Felt she got something out of attending services when she had a minister at home?

Did your question involve something she did or did not do as a child?
Did it involve baptism?
Did it involve something her father did or did not do? To her? With her? For her?

HINT: Keep the following two facts in mind. 1. I had never met a "PK" (preacher's kid") before. 2. I had had very little experience with religious believers of any sort. And A BIG HINT: My question was taken to express disdain for religion (although I was too dense to anticipate this)

I'm not sure which question is the "obvious" one

Did you ask whether she had, as a child, believed:
that her religion was correct (in general)?
that God existed? created the universe? humans? is omnipotent? something about God?
that prayer works? that an afterlife exists? that people have souls?
something along these lines?
was it something that was actually part of her religion? or did you mistakenly think it was?

********* SPOILER *******
Growing up in Brooklyn, I encountered virtually no one who believed in God, except grandparents (whose belief was often explained by the fact that they hadn't had the benefit of a college education!)So when I was in my 20's & met someone the same age who told me she was a vicar's daughter, I asked her, "When you were a kid, did you believe in God?" "I still believe in God!" she replied indignantly. making me feel like an idiot. Thanks for sticking with it everyone, & for solving it, Wunderland, & please check out my new puzzle at the bottom of the page.
