There is a rather large building somewhere in Ontario. It contains officies, a library, and a few other types of rooms. Bob has been working there for 7 years. Every day when Bob enters his office, he walks through the building's atrium. Every single time some unfortunate person walks through said atrium, they smell an awful stench. The custodians are baffled by this stench, which has no obvious cause.

Thanks to Krss, whose "What's that smell?" puzzle (January 2004) gave me the idea for this as I was browsing through old puzzles...

By saying the word atrium caused the awful stench?
Did the stench come from a humans?death?
Was the government involved in any way?
Will guessing where Bob works be helpful?

Is the smell noticeable if Bob is absent from the building? Is Bob himself the cause of the smell?

Does the smell linger in the atrium? Or is it triggered by walking throught the atrium?
Are the offices relevant? The library? Has this been happening for seven years?

\bDoes Bob have a B.O problem? a flatulence problem? (well I had to ask) Does he do something to cause a smell? Are his shoes relevant? Is Bob aware of the smell?

By saying the word atrium caused the awful stench? If I understand you correctly, no. Rephrase would be good though.
Did the stench come from a humans?death? No to both
Was the government involved in any way? In a very, very broad, and irrelevant, way, yes.
Will guessing where Bob works be helpful? Not likely

Did someone put bird poo in the vents? Or it's just because the birds are on the building in a specific place and it comes in that way? Is there a place to land jets on top of the building?

********SPOILER********

There is a rather large building somewhere in Ontario. It contains officies, a library, and a few other types of rooms. Bob has been working there for 7 years. Every day when Bob enters his office, he walks through the building's atrium. Every single time some unfortunate person walks through said atrium, they smell an awful stench. The custodians are baffled by this stench, which has no obvious cause.

The building is actually MacDonald Hall on Queens' University campus. A few years ago, it was renevated, including a brand new atrium. There was a minor oversight, however, and the air intake vents were placed on top of the building. Come summer, seagulls decided that they quite injoyed spending time up there. Naturally, they left traces, which quite defiled the air coming into the atrium, causing the stink. Of course, there is now a cover over the vent. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this... I was hoping it would take you a bit longer...
