When L (not his real initial) was asked a very routine question at a party, he made a very clever joke that only someone with his job could make. What was it??

the question:
did it concern him? his job? his appearance? his relationships? his education? his place of residence? his childhood? his health? his pets? his family? his holiday?

was the question about something in the past?
was he asked about something he had done? something he had said? somewhere he had been? someone he had known?

was the question about something in the future? something he was going to do? somwhere he was going to go?

did he say anything relevant before the question was asked? had he asked a question himself?

relevant who asked the question? relevant if male of female? was it an adult?

is his job an unusual one? does he work indoors? outdoors? for the government? for a religious organisation? in retail? in law enforcement? in management? with animals? with children? in the arts? in education? with science? in healthcare?

would the puzzle work if he was a woman?

is his job relevant?

when he works he generally:
-talks
-uses his hands
-other part of his face
-uses his penis
-uses more parts of his body at a time (please do not treat this question strictly),
-uses his legs,
-uses other part of his body,
-actually doesn't use anything?

Does he work directly with the customers? if so, which type of contact does he have with them:
- he looks at them,
- they look at him,
- talks to them,
- hears them,
- touches them,
- they touch him,
- any other?

When he work, does he do it alone or with co-workers?
If he has a direct contact with customers, how many of them are there?
- 1,
- less than 10,
- more than 10,
- more than 100?

Did the question-asker know the man's job? relevant? if she did, relevant how she knew?
(is it okay to assume she's female, since it's irrelevant, and makes the pronouns easier?)
Is her profession relevant? her religion?
Only someone with his job could make the joke - because of something that only people with his job are able to do? Something only they are able to see? To wear? a service only they are able to perform? Because of something people with his job are not allowed to do?

*** SPOILER ***************
When Cardinal L was asked a few years ago "Red or white?" about his choice of wine at a cocktail party, he picked up on the double entendre (asking whether he wanted the white of the Pope rather than the red of a cardinal) & said. "Red--for now." (N.B. I don't remember who it was, but it wasn't Ratzinger; so he didn't become Pope. Sorry it was so easy, but please check out my new, harder one at the bottom of the page (as well as my old harder ones that have been awaiting solution for sooooo long)
