Yay, thank you for reviving my puzzle :)

By Lisa (Dlcygnet) on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 06:21 pm:

Ok, is this game more like a pageant? I don't know... sorry... this question made me ponder and I can't come up with a satisfactory answer.
More like a competition? yes, closest to this
A parlor game? no
Athletic in nature? Or require athletic ability? no
Is this a game that can be played sitting at a table? sure
Is this something that they might show or have shown on TV? Not as a sport, but I'm sure something like it has been mentioned or shown on TV more than once.
Does it involve the contestants getting injured not physically or humiliated possibly throughout the competition?

Is this a game that no-one wants to lose? losing is not ideal either, but it would bother some more than others

Is the nature of the game such that it's not a matter of winning or losing? no, there is a winner and a loser

Is the outcome of the game fixed? like a wrestling match? no

By The Undertaker (Undertaker) on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 10:06 pm:

Having read this bit above:

Do people take part in this game voluntarily? yes
Given the choice, would a potential participant prefer to lose the game? probably, but that's not ideal either or not to take part at all? this would probably be the best way to resolve it

This suggests that the participants are tricked into playing this 'game'? or maybe that's too harsh - they simply don't know what they are letting themselves in for?? Closest to the latter... when they start, they don't think about how it's going to end.

Is the idea that they don't want the game to end? yes(ish)

Does it need physical skills to win the game? mental skills? endurance? knowledge? cleverness? sheer luck? is it just silly?
Do the players in the game have to do physical movements? do they have to say something? to write something?
Is a table required for the game?
Do the players the gaming activity sequentially (like throw the dice one after the other, or play a card one after the other)? or are all players engaged in the same activity during the same time?
If the players, once engaged in the game, (yesishly) want it never to end, do they benefit from being in the game?
Is there a way that one of the players voluntarily becomes the loser by just saying "I give up" or something similar?
Does the game usually start in the way that one player persuades somebody else to play this game with him? Or is there some other person involved who gets the two players playing?
Are the players male? female? relevant?

Love? Relationship? Marriage? Pregnancy?

I can't get my mind off of those for some reason...

Is the "winner" proclaimed? (shown on the news?)
Does the "loser" lose something? (other than pride)
While engaged, do they hope for themselves to win?

Washroom related?
Work/profession/employment related?

Are there set pieces? equipment?
Any location is possible?

"Finchley Central" was described thus by its inventors, Anatole Beck and David Fowler, in an article called "A Pandora's Box of Non-Games":

Two players alternate naming the stations on the London Underground. The first to say "Finchley Central" wins. It is clear that the "best" time to say "Finchley Central" is exactly before your opponent does. Failing that, it is good that he should be considering it. You could, of course, say "Finchley Central" on your second turn. In that case, your opponent puffs on his cigarette and says "Well...". Shame on you.

Beck and Fowler added:

M. Henton of New Addington noted with horror that there is an isomorphism between Finchley Central and the game commonly known as "Nuclear Deterrent". It occurs to me that we should work very fast to analyse these non-games, before we are left with a non-world."

As soon as I learn the names of more than a couple London Underground stations, I'll plan on playing that game. It sounds very Bohemian :P

**HINT**

This "game" could better be described as an "argument."

The game some couples play of "I love you more?" "No, I love you more." et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum, ad nauseum? YES! Hooray!

*****************SPOILER******************

When couples play the game, "I love you more," "No, I love you more," one person has to give in for the game to end. This is probably the LAST thing you'd want to hear:

You: "I love you."
Them: "I love you more."
You: "No, I love you more!"
Them: "Yeah, you're probably right. You win."

Therefore, it's the game that no one wants to win :) (And I have gotten caught in this loop before... it's tough to get out of gracefully!)
