The saddest part of this to me is the last lines, "All shall fade" Is this the part that was changed? NO! Good question! Actually, upon further review, that line has been changed slightly, but only to fit it to the music better. That isn't the relative change. The original had, "Away shall fade." I assume it was changed simply to reduce the number of syllables. |

Well, in the book, Frodo and Sam sing it, while they're still in the Shire, on the way from Bag-end to Buckland, and the relevant verse is:
"Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight.
The world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!"
So it's not a sad song at all, but a song of homecoming, and rest after a rather enjoyable journey.
The first two verses are about the pleasures and excitement of travelling and finding new things and new places.
Dropping those two verses, and leaving off the last two lines turns the meaning on its head, as does setting it more toward the end of the quest, rather than at the beginning.
add to that, setting it in a minor key, and what was, in the book, a rather cheery walking-song turns really bleak and forboding. |
