A stopper for the sink? A rod to hang clothes on (or even on which to hang clothing)? Espresso machine? Armadillo snood? Umbrella rack? Fire extinguisher? Intercom? Is it normally considered (or even assumed) to be part of something else? |

Another storage area? Missing whatever made of... air? space? vacuum? wood? Metal? glass? plastic? mineral? sand? paper? another element on the periodic table? A combination of the above? Missing a whole room? A whole compartment? Are you the only person in all of _____ without a closet? |

Did you only discover that the thing-gummy was missing when you tried to use the widget that it's a component of? Was the missing thingy in any way attached to the structure of the room? Was it attached to a piece of free-standing something-else? Is the missing thing-gummy smaller than a deck of cards? smaller than a toaster? smaller than a sofa cushion? smaller than a desk? smaller than a bed? |

Is it specifically "in" the room? Or could it be outside, such as a doorbell or door knocker? |

What all was attached to my dorm-room door? Hmmm... Not much. The room number plate? a peephole? door knocker? Sometimes in the room, sometimes outside... is it mounted to the outside of the door, then, so that when the door is closed it's outside, and when the door is open it's inside? or is it something that can be mounted on either the inside or outside of the door, as the landlord decides? |

I think we're all assuming it has hinges, since otherwise it would've been pretty obvious the first time you went to open it, but what the heck, does it have hinges? The pin for the hinges? A kick plate (the sheet of metal sometimes added to the bottom of doors to prevent scuffs/dings from people kicking it as they go through)? |

Mail-slot cover? Something really obvious that we've all missed? Something typically found on residential doors? on business doors? You're sure that knowing why the previous resident removed it won't help us? |

By John Morahan (Wunderland) on Monday, November 07, 2005 - 10:05 pm: A key? *grin* I was wondering when someone would take a stab at the most obvious answer. Much fun could have been had saying 'no to all' as I watched increasingly bizarre attachments to doors being offered as solutions. However, as the old adage goes, the most obvious answer is also the correct one. ********** SPOILER ********** My room has no key. I transferred from room 935 to room 918 halfway through the year, given my dissatisfaction with the windowless matchbox I had been assigned to. The resident who lived in 918 before I did lost his room key early on, and he terminated his contract with the hostel's owners halfway through the year, moving out... with the only replacement key. A second replacement was never made. It may be mildly relevant to point out that I moved out of the building on November 5th, 3 days before a spoiler was issued. |
