Did you only discover that the thing-gummy was missing when you tried to use the widget that it's a component of?
Was the missing thingy in any way attached to the structure of the room?
Was it attached to a piece of free-standing something-else?
Is the missing thing-gummy smaller than a deck of cards? smaller than a toaster? smaller than a sofa cushion? smaller than a desk? smaller than a bed? |

Is your room only one, all-purpose room? a bed-sit? Do you have a private bathroom, or is it down the hall?
Doorlock knob? deadbolt? deadbolt knob? the lever-thing that controls the angle of the heat vent louvers? window crank? Ventian blind adjuster? the bollard to tie the blind cords off to?
Where the bigger thing that the Missing Whatzit was attached to was: on the ceiling? a wall? a window? the floor? the door? a transom?
Is the Missing Whatzit a control device of some sort? a handle? a switch? |

I think we're all assuming it has hinges, since otherwise it would've been pretty obvious the first time you went to open it, but what the heck, does it have hinges? The pin for the hinges?
A kick plate (the sheet of metal sometimes added to the bottom of doors to prevent scuffs/dings from people kicking it as they go through)? |

A key? *grin* I was wondering when someone would take a stab at the most obvious answer. Much fun could have been had saying 'no to all' as I watched increasingly bizarre attachments to doors being offered as solutions. However, as the old adage goes, the most obvious answer is also the correct one.

My room has no key.
I transferred from room 935 to room 918 halfway through the year, given my dissatisfaction with the windowless matchbox I had been assigned to. The resident who lived in 918 before I did lost his room key early on, and he terminated his contract with the hostel's owners halfway through the year, moving out... with the only replacement key. A second replacement was never made.
It may be mildly relevant to point out that I moved out of the building on November 5th, 3 days before a spoiler was issued. |
