One of them would be the new king. He had them brought to his bedside and this is what he told them. "50 miles to the west from here, is a castle. The castle holds treasures beyond your beliefs. I want you both to pick the fastest steeds from your stables and ride to the castle. Whose horse will get there second will be the new king." Then he whispered something to each one of them. What was it, that he whispered? Since he had said the son whose horse got to the castle last would win, if they were riding their own horses, they'd both be trying to be the slower, and the race would likely never end, since neither one would be willing to start before the other. But if they each rode the other's horse, they'd ride as fast as possible so that their own horse would arrive later.
