It also looks like going through the same color in two consecutive rooms doesn't work - have we tried going in order of the ROYGBIV pattern in the color spectrum? |

we can go through red force fields, we just can't go through the same color twice in a row |

Ok...checking out the green field first with my shoe... ...and WOW! I'm glad I tested it first before trying to go through it, because there's NO WAY I'm going to go through it now! I don't wanna get zapped! |

Alright. Try ROYGBIV then? Test and walk through the red door, please? |

Well, the red force field does pass the shoe test, so I'm stepping through... ....and I'm in a new room -- I think. There's a red force field behind me to the east, another red force field dead ahead of me to the west. Finally, there's a yellow force field to the south. Nothing on the north wall, though. Now what? |

Try the yellow. |

Ok...stepping through the yellow force field to the south... ...and I'm in another room. Let's see: only two force fields here -- a blue one to the west, and the yellow one behind me to the north. Boy, I hope one of them let's me through, or else I'm trapped here! |

better try the blue |

Right...stepping through the blue force field now.... ....and I'm back in a room with three force fields. A yellow force field to the north, a red force field to the south, and of course, the blue force field behind me to the east. Nothing on the west wall in front of me. So where do I go from here? |

Hrm. Kay. Red again? |

Red it is! Stepping through now.... ....and I'm in a new room. There are red force fields to the north and the east, and a blue force field to the south. Still nothing on the west wall, though. |

well, guess blue's our only choice! let's give it a shot. i think you might see yellow on the east wall. |

It looks like we're in a 5x5 grid, the only exit we've found that would extend beyond the 5x5 grid so far is the green one. One idea is that if we can't go through the same color twice in a row, and green is made of blue and yellow, we have to enter that particular room from the red door so that we can go out through the green - anyone want to try to get there like this? |

I was just thinking the same thing. E/S/W/N/E/N/N/W/N/W/N from the next room should do it. |

Ugh... I'm confused... Hey Bob, when you're going through the blue forcefield, walk so that half of your body is on one side and half is on the other, then turn around and walk back into the room you started in. Then test the force field with your shoes. |

Instead of E/S/W/N/E/N/N/W/N/W/N wouldn't it be easier to do /E/N/N/W/N/W/N? E/S/W/N/E just gets you back to the same spot you'd be in if you went /E.... |

Crap. I meant E/S/W/N/W/N/N/E/N/E/N... got my east and west mixed up |

And for some reason I had assumed Bob had already gone through the blue force field and was about to go through the yellow one that Jennifer mentioned... aaargh! So what I *really* meant was E/E/S/W/N/W/N/N/E/N/E/N. But pay no attention to me. I'm obviously even more lost than poor Bob. |

John, your last suggestion matches up with my map... let's have Bob do that. Bob, please go E/E/S/W/N/W/N/N/E/N/E/N after going through the blue force field. |

I'm glad someone's keeping up with Bob's progress on a map, that should help. Are we noting the rooms that have only two exits? |

Very nice job, people, and especially Jennifer who did the lion's share of the work. You've gotten Bob out of the maze. However, since I'm short on time right now, I'll defer a more proper $poiler until later. In the meanwhile, though, now that you know what a lateral maze is, are there any comments and/or suggestions to improve the concept? I know, I know, the rule for this particular maze was pretty simple to figure out, but as you can imagine, it can easily be made much tougher. |

That was really a lot of fun. It's the first one I've done. It helps doing some simple ones first to get the idea... let's see more of these! |

They seem to be really really difficult... not to mention time consuming. I checked it out near the beginning and I knew I would never be able to work it out myself. Although I can definately draw up a map with some rules... |

Ok....I'm following the set of directions given to me....here's to hoping that I don't get the zappity-zap-zap by any of the force fields! And I made it! Yay! After stepping through the green force field, I find myself mysteriously back on the sidewalk, on my way to work! But what about my wallet? Hmmm...let me check my pockets...and it's there! The compass is gone, though, and according to my watch, no time has passed! Strange....did I imagine the whole thing? Whatever the case, I can't thank you guys enough for getting me out of there! Anyway, I gotta go...work beckons! Catch you all later. Once again, thanks to everyone to participated. I'll consider setting another lateral maze if there's more time. Vae: I agree it is time consuming, which is why running lateral mazes takes dedicated puzzlers and hosts. So I perfectly understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. And before I forget, here's the obligatory... ************* SPOILER ************* |

As a small FYI, here is the layout of the maze. I hope it's pretty self-explanatory: ---------------G--------------- |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| |.....R.....R.....Y.....B.....| |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| ---Y-----Y-----B-----R-----R--- |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| |.....B.....|.....Y.....|.....| |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| ---R-----------R-----B-----Y--- |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| |.....R.....Y.....|.....R.....| |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| ---B-----Y-----------------Y--- |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| |.....Y.....R.....Y.....B.....| |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| ---R-----B-----B-----B-----R--- |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| |.....B.....Y.....R.....Y.....| |.....|.....|.....|.....|.....| ------------------------------- One small note: The only room missing in the map above is the first room, with the three force fields on the north wall. All the exits in that room is a one way jump into the middle room at the bottom row. So, basically, it dictates initially which force fields are opened to the Bob, and which one will get him zapped. |

And one final word: The idea of this maze came from the Amiga computer game "Sleeping Gods Lie". The basic concept in that maze is the same as this one, but the layout was much more complex. |
