The thing(s) you saw that caused this misunderstanding: inside? outside? on the computer/television? the coffee itself? the steam rising from the coffee? the coffee mug? the kettle in which you boiled water?

Did you think you saw a monster? (don't tell me, there are no monsters in Shepherd's Bush...you should see what wanders the streets of North London...)

Did you see something and know what it was and misinterpret its significance? Or think it was something else entirely? Something scary?

So did you boil water in a saucepan? With an immersion heater? By putting it in a vacuum? by getting a dragon to breathe on it? Did you use it straight out of your boiler?

Did you think you saw a monster? no (don't tell me, there are no monsters in Shepherd's Bush...you should see what wanders the streets of North London...Indeed. I have it on good authority that a man has horns in Tufnell Park.)

Did you see something and know what it was and misinterpret its significance? yes, with a very faint ish Or think it was something else entirely? no Something scary? The one thing I regret, he said, is that it cannot speak.

So did you boil water in a saucepan? no With an immersion heater? no By putting it in a vacuum? no by getting a dragon to breathe on it? are you Newgirl in disguise? Did you use it straight out of your boiler? no

Well...did you even boil it yourself then?

Did your wife or girlfriend boil it for you?

Did you boil it in the oven?

Did you use one of those Italian things where you pull a tab, and it becomes iced or hot coffee (you do have to choose before you buy the product?)

Was there, in fact, any boiling water involved? Hot water? warm water? tepid water...

Well...did you even boil it yourself then? I caused it to be boiled, yes.

Did your wife or girlfriend boil it for you? no. And the butler was on holiday.

Did you boil it in the oven? no, with the faintest of ishes

Did you use one of those Italian things where you pull a tab, and it becomes iced or hot coffee no (you do have to choose before you buy the product? the agonies of indecision would, I am certain, have rendered me immobile)

Was there, in fact, any boiling water involved? yes Hot water? at some stage warm water? at an earlier stage tepid water... and at an earlier stage still. Cold water at some point also featured in the proceedings.

So...we seem to be running out of ways to boil water, but before I go further into the realm of the fanciful..did you boil the water in the microwave? (You should not have done; see: http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/superheating.html)

Did the water explode? no, although I gather that this was more by luck than judgement. Fortunately, I do not have any unscratched coffee mugs.

I was going to suggest this last time, but it seemed bit far-fetched; now it seems rather obvious:

As you were closing the microwave door, you saw in it your reflection but you thought it was your doppelganger. Knowing that only one of you could survive the encounter, you ran away in fear. But then you realised how foolish you had been, because if *you* hadn't been the one to survive the encounter, you wouldn't have been alive to react in any way at all.

Presumably you saw him before he had a chance to see you. But it was really your reflection anyway.

Was there a message displayed on the microwave? about the status of the coffee? about the door of the microwave? instructing you to open it? close it?
Did the numbers on the timer (if any) appear to form a word?

Did you leave the mug in the microwave?

Did you leave the kitchen before the coffee had finished making?

Did something that you saw? read? on the microwave remind you of the thing that you had foolishly failed to do? Was what you saw the time display? the power setting?

***** SPOILER *****

I had been away from home for a couple of weeks, during which time the clocks had gone back an hour.

Most of the timepieces in my flat deal with this automatically. But the clock on my microwave does not.

I had an appointment to see my doctor at 11 am one morning. I was in fact in no danger of missing the appointment, and was preparing some breakfast. This included heating a cup of coffee in the microwave.

As I removed the cup from the microwave, the display - which previously had been timing the heating process - reset to "clock" mode, and informed me that it was 11:20 am. I left the coffee and rushed out of the door, fool that I am.

Well done Mosquito, well done everyone except William Willett.

Surely you are placing blame where it does not belong! The long summer evenings are very pleasant, and it is depressing around now when the sky starts to darken at 3:00 in the afternoon -- British Summer Time should replace GMT all year round, in my opinion.

Surely you are placing blame where it does not belong! of course I am. It is all my fault, as usual. But cannot expect me to admit this. The long summer evenings are very pleasant, and it is depressing around now when the sky starts to darken at 3:00 in the afternoon -- British Summer Time should replace GMT all year round, in my opinion. Britain should in my opinion at once be declared an equitorial zone.
