When Orla telephoned an organization to see whether it had received her dues, she was unpleasantly surprised, even though her dues had been received, no more money was due, & the organization was unchanged & was not trying to expel her. How come?? |

The organization was not what she thought it was? Had she wanted to leave the organization? Had she hoped they wouldn't cash the check? Relevant how she paid (cash, check, credit etc.)? |

Is it relevant that she telephoned rather than writing her request or appearing in person (whether that would be practical or not)? Had she sent a cheque? Relevant? |

Did the organisation fully understand what she was calling to ask? Did they answer the question exactly as she intended it? For some reason, I imagine they believe it is a bequest from a will: Did you receive my money? I'll just look it up Madam, how long ago did you die? |

did she get an automated message? which said or implyed something she wasn't expecting? does it mater if she got a human individual or automated message? did she get through to them or discover that their phone was dead/the number was changed? did the surprise come in the form of something said to her by a living person? Did the presumed living person know it would suprise her? wish to inform/warn her? did the person refer to her using a different name/title? was she unable to do something on the phone she expected to? if surprise didn't come from a person then did it come from: a machine or automated responce? a sound in the backround? something differnet about this phone call then previous ones? important she was calling about dues? could she be calling for any reason? is the accepting of her dues, cost of her dues, or any other issue involving the payment of her dues lead to the surprise? did she learn that a friend of hers(who was suppose to answer phones for this orginization) was fired when another person answered the phone? |

Did the person who answered the phone imply that they weren't impressed with her? Is this one of those charitable organisations where they have a "suggested donation" for membership? Had she donated less than suggested? |

Is the relevant fact about the organisation: its purpose? Its structure? Someone who works for it? How often the dues are collected? So the conversation went along the lines of: "Hello, my name is Orla ..., did you receive my dues this month? year?" "Yes" Is the relevant bit to why she was unpleasantly surprised something that was said after / instead of "Yes"? Or could the conversation have been exactly as above, but other factors caused her surprise? |

Before she rang, did Orla have a particular reason to believe her dues might not have been received? Were the dues paid weekly? monthly? yearly? ... Had the dues been received on previous occasions? Had there been problems with the dues previously? Did the organisation provide a service? Was she expecting goods to be delivered? Which had not arrived? |

Is the LTPF relevant? Were you expecting your name to be recognised as a writer? Was the organisation one you had previously been very involved in, and so you thought it would be strange they wouldn't recognise you? Had you recently done something news-worthy, and thought it would have been noticed by the organisation? |

We have 2 Orla Smiths." This happened to me while my name was still Felicia Ackerman. I was amazed, but now I'm completely safe. How could it ever happen to Felicia Nimue Ackerman? Good puzzle, I didn't mean to imply you were conceited, I thought this may be an organisation where you were an active participant (whereas before I had stuck in my head that it was a charity with thousands of near-anonymous donors) - after all if it were a running association and you had just won the marathon you would be slightly irritated if you rang up and they completely failed to mention the fact! |
