So she writes 'Waterford on a card and puts it in her coat pocket, for the purposes of reminding herself about something (prompting her to do something??) And then she gets it out about once an hour and looks at it? And as far as she is concerned (the first time? One of the times?) she looks at it, the text has changed to HH? Is she meant to think she wrote HH instead of 'Waterford'? Are memory-improving techniques involved - keywords? Hooks? Was she half asleep when she wrote it |

No(ish) And then she gets it out about once an hour and looks at it? Sometimes more often, sometimes less. It is rather irregular. But it would work with strictly every hour too. And as far as she is concerned (the first time? No One of the times? Yes) she looks at it, the text has changed to HH? Yes Is she meant to think she wrote HH instead of 'Waterford'? No Are memory-improving techniques involved - keywords? Hooks? Neither Was she half asleep when she wrote it No... |

Was she not thinking clearly when she wrote it? Does she imagine that one of the times she looks at it, she will need to take some action? Was she expecting the text to change? Is that why she kept checking? If so, is that because someone told her it would? |

Has something similar happened to her in the past? To her: was the text changing a good thing? Bad thing? Neutral? What would have happened if the text had changed but she hadn't found out for 3 hours / 24 hours / 48 hours? In her mind? Actually? |

Sorry that last bit wasn't clear - I meant what did she think would happen if she didn't find out it had changed? And what would actually be the result? |

This is turning my brain to jelly!!!! 1) Is Holmes the surname of the couple? 2) Did either of the couple have a sensory impairment? 3) Were they going to use a simulator to try out hang gliding? 4) Is charity or fund raising involved? Z |

Had Jim ever seen the card before he found it in her pocket? Did he know why she had it? Did Rosie look at the card everytime some event occured? Every time she performed some action? On a whim? For some other reason? Had she put the card in her pocket recently? Within the last day? Month? Year? Date relevant? |

Don't give up - you'll ask the $10000 question eventually 1) Is Holmes the surname of the couple? Irrelevant 2) Did either of the couple have a sensory impairment? No, and irrelevant 3) Were they going to use a simulator to try out hang gliding? No 4) Is charity or fund raising involved? No Z By Ian (Image) on Saturday, February 25, 2006 - 03:33 pm: Had Jim ever seen the card before he found it in her pocket? No Did he know why she had it? Well, he deduced it upon finding the card Did Rosie look at the card everytime some event occured? No Every time she performed some action? No On a whim? Yes For some other reason? Well there is a reason behind it, yes Had she put the card in her pocket recently? Let's say a few weeks ago Date relevant? No |

So, when Rosie saw the new card, she thought she saw the old one? Who did she think wrote HH - herself? Another human being? A non-human being? Would this have worked if Jim had reused the original card, erasing W (and writing HH)? Stab in the dark: Did she try to change the writing on the card using her psi powers, and seeing that it worked she knew she had the mental power to overcome her phobia? |

It's worth a try! If I had looked at the card to begin with would I have seen "Waterford"? And afterwards, "Hercule Holmes"? Magic eye pictures relevant? Was she checking the card so frequently because she needed to know as soon as possible that it had changed? Would something bad happen if she didn't find out for a while? Or did she think it would? Expanding on Guy's question, did she believe she had magic powers at all? |

Did she think her brain would interpret the symbols differently so that she would 'see' the same word in a different way? Is what she thought would happen actually possible? Likely? |

This is fascinating... so she wrote some words on a card and put the card in her pocket? did she do this in the expectation that, at some future point in time she would read the card? and it would say something different? or in the hope that it would? presumable the changing of the words on the card had some significance for her? did it signify that something in herself had changed? that something in the world about her had changed? that some event had taken place? is any sort of altered mental state relevant to theis puzzle? hypnosis? sleepwalking? alcohol or drug induced altered mental state? did she know that she had written waterford on the card? did she think that someone else had? the something similar that had happened in the past - did it involve writing? a message? writing changing? when she agreed to go hangliding was it because she would no longer be afraid? because she would still be afraid but would be able to conquer her fear? because she would have decided that it wasn't such a big deal after all? because she actually wanted to do something scary? |

was she expecting the words to change? the color to change? Did the changing of the word help her in deciding to go for hand gliding? Would she have decided to go for handgliding when asked even if the word havent changed? After seeing the word on the card change, if she was not asked for handgliding would she still have voulentered for hand gliding? Did she accept to hand glide or just watch Jim glide? is this relevent? |

By Hannah Kinghern (Kdoc) on Monday, February 27, 2006 - 05:07 pm: This is fascinating... so she wrote some words on a card and put the card in her pocket? One word, actually, but that is irrelevant. The answer is yes. did she do this in the expectation that, at some future point in time she would read the card? Yes and it would say something different? Yes or in the hope that it would? Yes presumable the changing of the words on the card had some significance for her? Yes did it signify that something in herself had changed? After a fashion, yes that something in the world about her had changed? Oh... Yope that some event had taken place? Yes is any sort of altered mental state relevant to theis puzzle? Yes hypnosis? sleepwalking? alcohol or drug induced altered mental state? But none of these did she know that she had written waterford on the card? Yes did she think that someone else had? No the something similar that had happened in the past - did it involve writing? Yes a message? No writing changing? Yes when she agreed to go hangliding was it because she would no longer be afraid? does she have any sort of mental illness? split personality? the altered mental state - concerned with meditation? heightened emotion? 'mind over matter'? hallucination? religious trance? was she in an altered mental state when she wrote waterford? when she put the card in the pocket? did she think she was in an altered mental state when she read the card? did she think that she herself had written hercule holmes? or did she think she must be in some kind of altered mental state when she read it? was she? did she think she had somehow made the writing change? which signified to her that she would not be afraid to go hangliding? or that she would be safe if she did so? |

The writing changed that happened in the past is it relevent? If so is the time it happened relevent? Was she trying to test the same writing change that happened in the past by having a card written waterford in her pocket? Does Jim know about the event that happened in the past? Was he tricking her even in the past event of writing change? |

Did she think she was dreaming when she read the words on the card? that sort of lucid dream when someone in the dream realizes that it must be a dream? Did she put the card in her coat to check out whether she is dreaming? Is she suffering from frequent sleepwalking? |

Did she think she was dreaming when she read the words on the card? YES - puzzle solved! that sort of lucid dream when someone in the dream realizes that it must be a dream? Yes Did she put the card in her coat to check out whether she is dreaming? Yes Is she suffering from frequent sleepwalking? No *************** SPOILER ***************** A few weeks ago, Jim spotted a magazine on Rose's nightstand, open on an article about lucid dreams. It explained that one way of detecting that one is dreaming, is to carry a card with something written on it. Take it up and read it as often as you can. If you do it often enough over a long time, it will become an ingrained habit, which you will also start doing in your dreams. Only, most people can't properly read documents in their dreams; either the document will read something other than it does in real life, or you won't be able to read it at all. When you become aware that you are dreaming, you can take control over the dream and do whatever you like. So by changing the text, Jim made Rose believe that she was dreaming, which convinced her she could go hanggliding without danger. Thanks everyone - well done! |
