Is the event being celebrated an annual event? Weekly? Daily? Monthly? No periodical event Is what the event is relevant except for the fact that it meant there were already bells ringing when Lucas heard the other bell? Yes, knowing the event will help you to find out about the bell |

Does this have to do with the old practice of having a bellpull in the coffin, so a buried person could ring it (and be rescued) if he turned out to be alive? Is Lucas' father like a Pope? |

In case the earlier post doesn't pan out: Are the "many bells" different from the one that joined in? For example, they were funeral bells, while the joining bell was used by the father to signal that he was alive? |

For example, they were funeral bells, while the joining bell was used by the father to signal that he was alive? *************SPOILER************ The story took place in the 18th century. The bells were church bells and rang during the funeral of Lucas' father, the town's judge. He lew in one of these old-fashioned coffins which had a bell in case the decendent should come back back to live. Being keen on his money, Lucas had poisoned his father, but the poison was too weak: he woke up during the funeral and rang the bell. Lucas could be sure his father would sentence him to death.
