He = adult human male? relevant what he had been doing before he fled? did he see something? someone? that made him fled? did he do something? was he scared? relevant where he was at the time of the fleeing? was he fleeing to anywhere in particular?

so, Boy is watching a performance in a funfair, right? By one or more performers, at least one of whom has a rifle? Some kind of sharp-shooting act? Does the performer with the rifle purposely intend to scare Boy? and/or others in the audience? Does the performer point the rifle at Boy? Or wave the rifle round in a wild fashion?

Did one side say something similar to "Let's kill the roundheads", and his name was Roundhead? Or is this down the wrong path?

I just envisaged some modern-day re-enactment of a battle between the English & Scots, where a cry of 'kill all the Scots!' caused young Scott to leave with haste :-)

So, a member of the performance says something which scares the boy because his first name is mentioned in the threatening sentence?
Is his name part of the name of the opposing side to the threatening person? Part of the name of the same side of the threatening person? Or part of a generally threatening phrase?
