Is 1+1 a number? A word? Is it impossible to answer? Is any knowledge of math needed to figure this out? (If so, I'm out...) Do the 1's stand for actual things, which in this case don't add up to two? |

Is the term "equal" misplaced here? Does 1+1 represent a number? In a mathematical sense? Is 1+1 an integer? a rational number? a positive numer? zero? 1? 11? 1.1? a different number in different situations? Is this one piece of one sort of things and another piece of another sort of things? An apple and a pear? Do the ones in the puzzle statement represent anything else besides the integer number one? Is the "1 & 1" company relevant? |

Anything to do with the fact that the toonie is a bimetallic coin and the loonie isn't? Is the value of any other Canadian coin relevant? Let me make sure that I've got things clear, here... In the statement "1+1 is not 2": The ones refer to the Canadian loonie, or $1.00 coin. The 2 refers to the Canadian $2.00 coin, or toonie. The "+" is to be regarded as something other than a plus sign. Two loonies consistently have more value in purchasing something than one toonie does, although their face value is equivalent. Making or receiving change is irrelevant. The place of purchase is irrelevant. So far, so good? Is the item purchased relevant? Is the normal price of the item purchased relevant? Does this non-equation refer to the purchase of one specific item? to the purchase of a class of items? to every purchase? |

Is there a tax on items that are sold at more than $1? Is there a tax on items that are sold at $1 or less? Are the taxes different? Do you pay the price that is shown on the price tags of the goods? Do they add the tax to the price shown on the price tags when you pay, e.g. the tag says "$1" but you have to pay $1.20? Relevant? Rounding up/down relevant? Is the tax a percentage that can not be expressed in coins? For example: You twice buy items at $1 + a tax of 7.6%. Each time you have to pay $1.076 = $1.08. So, all in all, you paid $2.16. Next time you buy one item at $2 + a tax of 7.6%. So you pay $2.152 = $2.15. Therefore, your second purchase is cheaper, and 1+1 costs you more than 2. |

Solane Is the + an object? No Tax?Yes We've reached **SPOILER** time Whilst in Canada one of the things that perpetually baffled me whilst shopping was that taxes were not shown on the price tag,but added at the till. This meant that I had some bizarre conversations at the counter along the lines of '$1 and $1..that's $2.37'. It made it very difficult to add up how much I would actually have to pay and if I had enough... But then that's Canada for you... |

It's the US, as well. Tax is added at the register in most cases. Except when it's not, because the item is non-taxable. Offhand, the only thing I can think of that's taxed and has the tax already added into the posted price is gasoline. Nice puzzle. |
