The thing sat in his room for six years, glaring at him. He liked it very much. Then one day he realized all the trouble it had caused and destroyed it. What was it?

By the way, if this sounds familiar, it is. True story. Feel free to e-mail early $p0i1ers.

Dead?

Never living? This.
An anthropomorphisation, such as a figurine? Yes, I'll be anthropomorphizing throughout the puzzle, I fear.
(had to look that one up!! ) It's a wonderful word.

Glaring with eyes? Yes.
Sat as in rested or as in pearched? Hmm, interesting choice of words...but neither exactly.
Destroyed it with a baseball bat? burnt it? ate it? None.

Hi!

Is it a piggy bank?

Number of years relevant?

Would it have caused trouble if it was not glaring at him? (for example if the thing was turned the way round)

Did the thing change throughout the years?

Is it a clock? Like on of those cat clocks with swinging tails and moving eyes?
Does it have moving parts?
Is it made of mostly one material?
If I were to looka the thing, would I offhand probably describe it as glaring? staring? looking? Boring? Interesting? Not noticeable? Handy? Silly? Romantic?
Method of destruction relevent?
Is it shaped like an animal? Human? Other living creature? A nonliving thing with a few living features?

did the thing actually cause the trouble? Or was it some psychological effect of the thing being there leading to trouble?
Party animal features - some amalgamation of human and creature? Like a carving of a sphinx?
would there have continued to be trouble for the man: -
If he had moved it to another room?
If he had moved it out of the house?
If he had sold it or given it away rather than destroyed it?

Did it produce any noise?

Was it a present from someone? Inherited? Custom made for the man? Bought from the store? Found somewhere?

Is it an item one can easily find in a regular house? Can it be bought in a shop?

Were there any direct consequences after he destroyed it, like, just an example, one army which is much stronger than the other one is constantly being defeated, but after they find out they are being spied and destroy the recording device they start winning?

A statue? A painting? a fountain? Is its size what makes it something not likely to be found in an average house? it's intrinsic value (aside from its value as a bug-hiding place)?

Great Seal of the United States? Ta-da!
********SPOILER**
In 1946, a wooden replica of the Seal was given to a US ambassador by Soviet school children as a sign of peace and cooperation. It hung or sat in his office for six years, then, during a routine security inspection, an evesdropping bug was found inside it. The thing could be triggered by radio signal to listen in on information. The Seal was promptly split open and taken away.
It is now in the International Spy Museum, under it's popular nickname "The Thing".
More thorough story here: http://www.spybusters.com/Great_Seal_Bug.html

Good job everyone for sticking it out-- to Aragorn for getting the spying half and Rabrab for getting what it was.
