A man was in hotel room when a terrible fire broke out. He was trapped in his room on the 20th floor and the window did not open. Poisonous smoke was coming under the door and through the A/C system and he started to choke. If he could last another 10 minutes help would arrive. What did he do?

Was there another room in the toilet where he could go to without air-con, e.g, the toilet?

Did he have any breathing apparatus?

did he set off the sprinkler to try and clear the air by 'washing it'?

Tobasi,

Did he breathe the air of the waste pipe putting a tube or similar through the ellbow of the toilet (as the water separated the air)?

YES

* * * SPOILER * * *

He pushed a rubber tube through the bend of the toilet bowl and breathed the air in the pipe beyond. The water in the toilet formed a barrier to the smoke.

The puzzle is based on a patent for a 'toilet snorkel' designed to be used as a lifesaver in just such circumstances.
