Alan is unmarried and lives alone. Without any financial responsibilites to attend to, he frequently enjoys one of his favourite (rather expensive) dishes: lobster with a bit of aged French wine. However, he has recently been dating Elaine, a coworker, and his habits have changed considerably: in her presence, he will never drink wine and always insists that his lobster be pre-cut. Why the sudden changes in behaviour?

Having never actually have the opportunity or means to eat lobster, I'd be grateful if you could expain the difference between pre-cut and non pre-cut lobster (if it's not too daft a question).

Is he somehow trying to impress his new companion?

Is he somehow trying to impress his new companion? No

Was he pretending to be disabled in some way?
Was he capable of cutting it himself?
Was his young fancy squeamish at the sight of animal carcases and maybe a teetotaller?
Could he afford to drink the wine?

And was she a non drinker?

Is silverware relevant?
Cutlery?
Does it matter if the eating is at a restraunt or somewhere else?

Has it got anything to do with him not wanting to touch the lobster with his hands? (smelling, being stained, staining her)
Is it a question of etiquette?
Is cutting the lobster preventing him from doing something he can only doing when he is together with her?

Would he react the same way if:
- they were just friends
- they were not coworkers
- he had dinner with someone else
- there were more people around the table

Does the alcohol make him:

Alan has OCD and has been having (irrational and involuntary) disturbances of stabbing Elaine, so he does not touch knives for fear that his obsessions will come true. He will not drink wine for fear that drinking will accelerate his chances of harming her.
