This may seem like an earlier puzzle, but it is completely different. Because of Joe's ignorance and a long-held tradition, Therese is still alive. |

Okay I'll start with the usual: Joe=human? Joe=male? Therese=human? Therese = female? Did Joe know Therese? Did Therese know Joe? Joe's occupation relevant? Therese's occupation? Ages important? (Enough typing - BTW, Superman, I like your puzzles.) |

We interrupt this puzzle to announce that ... I have recently discovered that this puzzle's prompt is extremely similar to that of DanielVS's 'Coincidences Save Lives.' DanielVS, if you're reading, just so you know, I'm not plagiarising; this puzzle is entirely different than yours ... and with that ... back to normal broadcasting |

Is there a murder weapon involved? If so: - Is it something normally associated with a murder weapon? - Did he/she bring the murder weapon? - Was it found on location? - Has Joe's ignorance to do with how to operate the murder weapon? Would murdering her be intentional or accidental? Is it important that they are boy and girl? What they feel for each other? |

But is there a murder weapon relevant? Is there one at all? Or would he have murdered her with his bare hands? I assume the method of murder is relevant... Is the long held tradition about murder? About Joe or others like him directly? About Therese or others like her directly? About the way in which the murder would have taken place? (e.g a tradition not to carry lighters, and Joe was going to set fire to Therese's house) Is it a common tradition? A regional tradition? Or a (reasonably) far-fetched one? Positive or negative tradition? As in going trick-or-treating, as opposed to not washing on Sundays? Is this a modern day scenario? If relevant: Is is not plausible before the [insert LPTFLPI as centuries, please]? After? |

Thank you! So, because of the two factors, Therese is still alive. Des this mean that the murder attempt failed? Or that the murder attempt didn't even take place? Like if it was delayed? Had Theresa at any time been aware of the murder attempt? Is she now, after its failure? Was the murder attempt premeditated? Would the murder weapon have been used as a blunt object? a sharp object? missile? Or would the death have been from something stranger such as hypothermia? poisoning? contracting a virus? Though you wouldn't really call poisoned cookies a weapon, i guess And finally: Is Joe still alive? Did the attempt backfire? And if not, will he try again? Or does he not want her dead anymore? |

Did Joe die while preparing the murder? Did he test something? Like, a tradition saying that some local animal's meat is poisonous, and Joe wanted to be sure, so he ate some? He can't be this ignorant! Or did he die while trying to actually murder Therese? Did he die by the same means that he intended her to die? By the same weapon, but some different way? |

But the murder weapon has been near Joe, in order for him to die? Does the weapon itself require physical contact with the victim? If it has been in contact with him: has it now been moved somewhere else? Or has it disappeared? Melted? Metamorphed? Was it acted upon by some external? natural? factor? Such as wind? Is the murder weapon alive? An animal? Mechanical? A robot? High-tech? A piece of machinery? Something similar? Remote controlled? Did it leave by itself after killing Joe? Would it come by itself when Joe would have attempted to kill Therese? Is killing the weapon's main purpose? Is the weapon capable of killing again? If the weapon is high-tech, then the tradition is much older than the weapon? But Joe didn't realize it and still felt he should... apply it? The accident and the would-be murder would both happen in the exact same place on the tracks, right? Is this place at a station? Just before or after a station? Far from any stations? Anything relevant about the particular location? Could it happen almost everywhere along the track? Did he intend to murder Therese by tying her to the tracks? (hehe) Getting her stuck in a car on the tracks? And he got run over by the train? Was he stuck on the track? Was he inside something(car)? If not, we should find out why didn't he jump out of the way! Perhaps the tradition fits in here? |

Did he know exactly when the train was coming? Did he try to find out somehow? Yes to both The accident and the would-be murder would both happen in the exact same place on the tracks, right? Yes this place at a station? Just before or after a station? Far from any stations? not at or adjacent to a station Anything relevant about the particular location? Yes Could it happen almost everywhere along the track? Yes Did he intend to murder Therese by tying her to the tracks? yes (hehe) Getting her stuck in a car on the tracks? No And he got run over by the train? Yes Was he stuck on the track? No Was he inside something(car)? No If not, we should find out why didn't he jump out of the way! Yes Perhaps the tradition fits in here? Yes Did he put the ear to the rails, but looked the wrong way? (away from the train) No |

Was he preparing the act in any way? Like... bringing rope? Did he know the train was coming toward him? Did he realise it was going to hit him? Did he realise he is going to die? Are we, by any chance, at one of those forks in the track, with a lever that switches the way trains go? |

Did he think the train was going to stop before hitting him? Did he think it would go another way? Did he simply not make the connection that the train will hit him and he will die? Did he realise he was on the tracks? Do you mean, by 'tradition', a common belief, such as an urban legend? Or an actual tradition, significant to a cultural group? sorry, i think i'm quite ambiguous, but it's 4 am here, and i was kept up by some work... now it's time to catch some shut-eye |

did he think the train would stop for some reason? did it normally stop at a place a little way down the tracks? or did he think the driver would see him and stop? did he not realise how fast the train would be travelling? was he working out the timing for how he would kill Therese? |

Was Therese supposed to be killed by a train? The train killing Joe, is it the same train that was supposed to kill Therese? The train he was expecting to come? Can we assume that trains wherever this is, are normally on time? |

Was he somehow confused with what time it was? Thinking in lines of timezones. Did he have the correct time schedule? Did he read it properly? Was it a special day when the train were running on another schedule? |

So he knew that the train would be coming, but he didn't believe it would come exactly at that moment? He thought it would come later? This means that he didn't actually see or hear the train approaching? Or did he see it, but he was certain that at that specific time the train would be slower and unable to kill? Was the actual time when he died, the time he expected to be when he would murder Therese? Was Therese there? |

So he thought that it was earlier than it actually was. Did he think it was earlier by: 1-59 min? 1-3hr? 3-23r? One day? More days? (if the exact time is necessary, or at least more specific than my ranges, could you assume LPTFLPI minutes?) His wrong knowledge of time is a result of him doing something out of ignorance? or a result of the tradition? how do you say in english? a result of him doing sth or a result of his doing sth? I think my reasoning is working when I infer that he couldn't have known for sure that Therese would have been there at any specific time. Therefore: Did he plan to bring her there? Or plan to make her go there by some means? |

While waiting for the time to come to bring his victim, Therese and tie her to the tracks, Joe fell asleep right there, on the train tracks. Unfortunatly for him, the time had changed to DST (or from DST, whichever moves it 1h forward), and Joe omitted to change the time on his alarm watch. Instead of waking up just in time, he ended up where he wanted Therese, sleeping with the fishies. (Or maybe food for the fish, considering the number of pieces in which he is split) Or maybe, the country recently switched the day on which to pass to and from DST (I remember this happened here when I was a little boy), and he wasn't aware of this? |
