Did someone put the black ink on her face? Did she put the ink on her own face? Unknowingly? Perhaps when she went to bed, she smeared the ink all over her face, thinking that it was face cream?

When she unknowingly put the ink on her face, was she sober? awake? delirious? Was she aware that she was putting something on her face? Was it dark? Can we assume that the ink came out of an ink bottle? Did she think the bottle of ink was something else? Did the ink get on her face before she went to bed? While she was in bed? Just after she awoke in the morning?

If it broke (assumed from a previous answer) then:
did it fell?
did she grab hold of it and clenched it hard enough that it broke?
did she fall with her head against it?
did she hit it? was it hanging somewhere?

Is the ink all over her face? If not then i would suggest it to be mascara that she left on, then she would wash her face and when she looks at the mirror the mascara would be all over her face due to her rubbing her face while it was still wet

Wait, after just reading, i think that maybe she was asleep and then was writing with a pen. THe pen was leaking and she suddenly went back to sleep on the paper she was writing and the leaking ink got on her face

When she filled the container did she intend to use the ink? for writing? did she have some other reason for doing it? Did she do the same to other similar containers?

Tired with having her eggs constantly stolen by an unknown thief, the old lady filled some empty egg-shells with ink and left them in the henhouse. The next morning she was shocked to see her face covered with ink, which would mean that she was eating the eggs while sleepwalking.
