Does the author have a silly name? A punning name? Is it his name that induces the chuckle? Is he a real author? We have established that he's male, haven't we? Is he still alive? If not, did he die before 1990? 1980? 1970? 1960? 1900? 1800? It's not "Robin Banks", is it? |

Do we need to know the title of a particular work that makes you chuckle when appended to the author's name? (eg Robin Banks would be an apt author for the title of this puzzle.) Would any reasonable English-speaking person chuckle at the name? Or would chuckling be considered immature (eg the composer Samuel Scheidt?) Is it a British name? An American name? A Chinese name? Are we looking for a first name and a surname? |

Do we need to know the title of a particular work that makes you chuckle when appended to the author's name? FA. I'm not the chuckler. the title of the puzzle is relevant in a cryptic way (eg Robin Banks would be an apt author for the title of this puzzle.) Would any reasonable English-speaking person chuckle at the name? noish but can't speak for all Or would chuckling be considered immature (eg the composer Samuel Scheidt?)no insofar as the name doesn't sound rude. I'm in a bit of a quandry as I chuckled when i read Mr Scheidt's name (very immature of me) Is it a British name? noAn American name? Is there such a thing? however he himself was American A Chinese name? no Are we looking for a first name and a surname? Yope |

What he wrote is irrev. His name is what's relevant to the puzzleis it the same named used on everything he wrote? no he wrote some things under another name but this is not a well known fact so the name is the one he wrote his famous works underis it a first name we are looking for? or a surname? or a pen name? this one |

OK: just to recap: we have a male musician in his 40s who chuckled (probably just once) at the name of an American poet who died after 1990, yes? Was the poet dead at the time of the chuckling? Is there a connection between the name of the poet and the name of the chuckler? Did the chuckler sing the name of the poet? Does he sing the words of the poet? Is the chuckler also American? |

Is the poet a very famous poet? I seem to have caused some confusion here. Let's just say that he is famous as a writer of books.Whether you consider his writing poetry is your own call but if you're trying to list poets I doubt you'd come up with him I'm having trouble coming up with poets who died after 1900 who used pen names...see above |

Just to clarify further. The reason I answered that he wrote more than one poem is that i consider his work to be poetry but he was never marketed as a poet as such. Hope i haven't ruined this? Some specific knowledge about the band's work is required. |

And Michael Stipe is the chuckler? Did Michael Stipe chuckle at the mention of Dr. Seuss? Was he asked about his lyric that mentions Dr. Seuss and chuckled? Did he do it on stage performing? |

I guess it's fitting that I have the answer to this puzzle, seeing as I live in the same town as Michael Stipe!! Correct me if any of my details are wrong: In the REM song "Side-winder Sleeps Tonight," there is a line: "A can of beans, of black-eyed peas, some Nescafe and ice, a candy bar, a falling star, or a reading from Dr. Seuss" During recording Stipe had trouble saying "Seuss" and kept saying "Zeus" instead. If you listen to the track on the album (Automatic for the People) you can hear hum laughing at himself for not being able to pronounce the name. I've been following this puzzle for a while and I can't believe I didn't think of the answer earlier!!! It's practically sacreligious to live in Athens, Georgia and not know your REM trivia!! |

By the way Becca i noticed a few weeks back that you were from Athens and wondered if you were a fan. I've been a REMer since their debut album Murmer so it's a love affair that's been going on for more than 20 years. The above lyric is pure Stipe and I feel people spend far too long trying to work out what he's singing about when he himself is on record as saying he sometimes just likes the way words sound together. He is capable of beautiful more understandable lyrics however as evidenced below. This is from a song called At my most Beautiful and I used to sing this verse to my baby girl to get her to sleep (mond you my voice was more likely to keep her awake) At my most beautiful I count your eyelashes secretly With every one whisper I love you I let you sleep I know your closed eye's watching me, listening I thought I saw a smile. Anyway onwards and upwards I'll post an non REM puzzle today for benefit of those heathens who've never heard of Michael Stipe |
