Just to clarify further. The reason I answered that he wrote more than one poem is that i consider his work to be poetry but he was never marketed as a poet as such. Hope i haven't ruined this? Some specific knowledge about the band's work is required. | ||

Nope, not familiar with REM, but I like them well enough. Got their "Out of Time" CD, I guess it was when they broke into mainstream. So Dr. Seuss is the author in question? Correct me if any of my details are wrong: In the REM song "Side-winder Sleeps Tonight," there is a line: "A can of beans, of black-eyed peas, some Nescafe and ice, a candy bar, a falling star, or a reading from Dr. Seuss" During recording Stipe had trouble saying "Seuss" and kept saying "Zeus" instead. If you listen to the track on the album (Automatic for the People) you can hear hum laughing at himself for not being able to pronounce the name. I've been following this puzzle for a while and I can't believe I didn't think of the answer earlier!!! It's practically sacreligious to live in Athens, Georgia and not know your REM trivia!! | ||

By the way Becca i noticed a few weeks back that you were from Athens and wondered if you were a fan. I've been a REMer since their debut album Murmer so it's a love affair that's been going on for more than 20 years. The above lyric is pure Stipe and I feel people spend far too long trying to work out what he's singing about when he himself is on record as saying he sometimes just likes the way words sound together. He is capable of beautiful more understandable lyrics however as evidenced below. This is from a song called At my most Beautiful and I used to sing this verse to my baby girl to get her to sleep (mond you my voice was more likely to keep her awake) At my most beautiful I count your eyelashes secretly With every one whisper I love you I let you sleep I know your closed eye's watching me, listening I thought I saw a smile. Anyway onwards and upwards I'll post an non REM puzzle today for benefit of those heathens who've never heard of Michael Stipe | ||
