Two men enter a room. They do not speak. They are joined by a third man; then by several more men. Nobody speaks. Finally, two more men enter the room, and the conversation begins. A journey is planned.

Are they going to stay there indefinitely? Return back again?
Are they going to take up the music again after they return?
Are they doing anything concerning music during the journey? Such as writing a new song? Planning something?
Is it likely that they meet again when they return home?
Is the kind of music they play important?
Do we need to figure out who they are?

Did the patron indicate that he/she could no longer support them financially so they had to look for a new patron?

Is their journey to seek new patronage?

Was Haydn the man who spoke first in the room?

candles hmmm is that someones name? no or wax candles? this one did someone light them? Haydn? his patron? it's not really the lighting of them that's relevant, but ... The candles are a side detail, though. The puzzle can be solved without them.

ok then. In 1772, Prince Nicholas decided to stay at the Esterhazy Castle some extra weeks, and the musicians were unhappy about it so they asked Haydn for some help. He an idea. The symphony had its first performance in front of the Prince, and every musician, when their part was completed, snuffed out the candle on his stand, gathered together his music, and left the stage with his instrument under his arm. At the end, even the conductor exited, leaving only two violinists on the stage playing. The Prince and his friends got the message, and the next day the order arrived saying they would be leaving.

Well played! The puzzle is set in the backstage rehearsal room at the first performance of Haydn's "Farewell" Symphony (no.45). Details can be found at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._45_(Haydn)

The symphony is always traditionally performed in this way, but normally without the candles.
