Someone ruined my day by mentioning a certain place. I have never been to that place, not has anyone I know, nor do I have any unfulfilled longing to go there, nor has anything upsetting to me happened there. How come mention of that place ruined my day?? |

Is this a real incident? Did the place remind you of something that occured there that you did not quite agree with? |

If it will help to find out the name of the place.... is it in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Australia or Africa. Or, is it a place in outer space? |

Probably there are places in the other locations as well, with the possible exception of outer space |

Hi Felicia Nimue are any of these relevant to your annoyance - your politics? your name? your hobbies? your work? your appearance? your friends? your family? your co-workers? your students? your pets? (how is Palomides?) were you annoyed at the person who said it? were you annoyed that such a place exists? is there just one place with this name that is relevant? |

Do you react the same way if you see the name/word in written? Are you using the word/name yourself? A lot? Are you avoiding it? Is it removed you your vocabulary? The reason you get upset, is it because: you feel guilty, it describes something about you, it reminds you of something that hurt you, something you could not help to stop, it requires an unpleasent response from you, it says something about the person saying it, you cannot tell the truth, you are disappointed with the other person? |

Hi I can't see where to go on this one.. So someone said the name of a place.. but it is irrelevant who said it? so the actual problem is the name itself? and the name reminds you in some way of something unpleasant? involving harm to someone? physical harm? emotional harm? but it's not relevant who in particular is harmed? and we should be looking for the link between you and this place? or you and this name? so the name upsets you - is that because any of these are relevant - racism? slavery? torture? murder? republicanism? Mallory? cats? is the problem that you just don't think a town should have a name like this? or you think it is a word that should not be used at all? does the word seem to speak of what happens there? or what sort of people live there? or who is welcome there? |

Is the name of the place also a thing? An object? A weapon? Something that does harm to others? Something that everyone knows about? Something happened that caused you to dislike this word. Ok i'm guessing the people of this particular city get on with their lives without being upset by the name of their city or what it conjures up? Is it just something personal with you why it would lead to your annoyance? Some personal trauma? lost opertunity? lost love? a reminder or some personal disability or inadequecies? |

This one is tough...I feel I am going around in circles. Let me see what I have so far, according to your responses... Someone mentioned a place to you that unmade your day. It was one noun, proper and intangible, and it was homonymous with something bad in English. The place meant something different to you--an incident that you would like to forget, and one which possibly would require you to make an unpleasant response (is this because you would have to say--ugh! I can't believe you mentioned that word!)? Something bad happened in the place (a city), but according to hints we need not focus on what happened, but your relation to it (is it a phobia of yours? is it something you would not like to think about because it deals with your final days? death? growing old?) Another hint stated that even though someone was harmed there, we should not focus on this person (this means we should not delve into history and look at specific events like holocaust? 9/11?)? You also stated that it could be a fictional city that would work as well? (I am confused with this, does this mean we could make up a city name using the word that displeases you and bother you as well)? I'm don't quite follow that hint, since it was a real place that the person mentioned that bothered you... Would looking through an atlas help--maybe for words that you might not like? I'm glad to know that I am not the only one OWT! |

The other meaning of the city name, is it: attribute of an object? abstract concept? natural phenomenon? characteristic of a person? Is the "bad" word in English? Would it be as "bad" in other languages? Would you have the same reaction if this word ( which may no longer sound as the name of the city ) was said in a different language? |

so, i am assuming that it wouldn't be helpful to go through an atlas to find names that might fit (with the description of the noun as being intangible, personal, and homonymous with something bad in the English language)? did your annoyance with this word have something to do with a past personal experience of some sort? boyfriend? bad breakup? marriage? divorce? ex-husband? does the word include a person's name? a person with whom you had been close? a person with whom you are no longer close? |

When you say that neither you or your friends have been "there", is "there" the place, the noun or both? Have you really asked you friends? Would asking people if they been in "name of place/noun" be an ambiguous question? If you referred to the noun, would that question be considered rude/strange/private/condescending? Would the question refer to something that you have experienced? |

HINT: You've now established thast the city name annoyed me by reminding me of something else with that name. this may seem uninteresting & unsurprising; so I'll add that the other thing annoyed me in a way that ONLY things in its very specialized category could annoy someone. So--find the catergory. |

Did some-one close to you "pass away" in this town/city (in for example, the state of Michigan?)? Did someone suggest that it was an appropriate place for that person to die? The very specialized category, is it a category of something visible? tangible? audioable? In this specific puzzle, is it a category of: people? animals? objects? events? -isms? stereotypes? Do you put yourself in this category? Your friends? Family? People you don't like? |

The original event probably required many people (hard to say how many), but one person would suffice for the reminder. IS it culturally based... ie more liekly to happen in the US? or in UK, or in France or in an arab country? The particular event is much more ;likely to happen in the US, but the same sort of thing, based on a similar event, could happen anywhere. Is it a sound? A sound which annoys you? If so, in the nails-down-a-chalkboard-sense (ie a noise that sounds unpleasant which you don't like hearing)? Or is there a particular reason it annouys you? |

I'm a little confused...could you recap? As far as I know we have established that someone mentioned a place name which also has another meaning. The other meaning is something audible, which annoys you for a particular reason. Is this right? I'm sure I have missed some details though, as I have only just started following this puzzle. |

Add the following to the puzzle description: Although the actual sitaution involved mention of an actual city, this puzzle could in principle work as well with mention of an imaginary place (or person or thing). What happened in the city is irrelevant. Lots of people could be annoyed this way; my myriad quirks are irrelevant. But spound is relevant. Someone who has been deaf all his life could not be annoyed in this way. As far as I know we have established that someone mentioned a place name which also has another meaning. The other meaning is something audible, which annoys you for a particular reason. Is this right? yes I'm sure I have missed some details though, as I have only just started following this puzzle. You seem to be doing fine. Please solve it!!!!! |

Is the title of the song also the name of the place? Or a line from the song? Or is the place name just mentioned in the song or its title? Does the place name remind you of a song you hate? Do you have a personal interest in the song? Did you write it? Sing it? Or someone you knew wrote it/sang it? |

Keep in mind that for the puzzle to work, it practiucally has to be a sone. A book title or article title weouldn't work. Think about why not. Do you have a personal interest in the song? no Did you write it? no. I've never written a song Sing it? no Or someone you knew wrote it/sang it? no |

Is there some reason why you would be forced to listen to the song you hate? Did the person mentioning it make you realise that you would have to listen to it for the whole day (thus unmaking your day)? Were you at some performance venue? Is the person who mentioned it singing the song? On the radio? In person? Are they talking abut the song, or talking about the place? |
