By ligthing that cigar did you then NOT do something else that would have cost £500? Did you smoke the cigar or just lit it? If you smoked it, would you still have saved the money if you had just lit it? Is it relevant; where this happens? if you're a regular smoker or not? whether anyone else was present? what type of cigar you lit? |

Does it matter what time of day it was? When it comes to where it happens, do we have to find a geographical location, like a country? state? city? or more specific, like a park? building? other? Was anyone else present when you smoked the cigar? If so, relevant how many? and are there anything special about these people? |

Did either persons present object to or was annoyed by your cigar smoking? Did either of them appreciate your cigar smoking? Were you in a store? Was this a private sale? Would the item's size give us any hints? Is the item of purchase bigger than a car? huggable size like one of those big teddy bears? two-hander size like a football? single-hander size that fits in the palm of your hand? Is it a tangible item? |

Is it bigger than a tv? yes bigger than a sofa? somewhat bigger but hard to quantify bigger than a double bed? this is closest to the size of it should we also try to determine what it is, not only how big it is? yes what it is is very relevant to how i saved the money but i suppose this is solvable without guessing the exact nature of the item. The item's size is also relevant but maybe you should concentrate on the circumstances of my smoking the cigar which will solve it quicker for you i feel |

I presume different items have a different weight to price ratio, so did he think you had a different item than you had? i.e. he though you were buying a cheap brand of whatever, but actually you had bought an expensive brand of it? |

Was there a reduction if the cost was over a certain value? Spend over £2,000 and save 25%? Did your wife move away from your smoke and get weighed as well? bringing the total up to a significant point? |

I presume different items have a different weight to price ratio, so did he think you had a different item than you had? no your presemption is not strictly accurate the items for sale all were priced at the same base value so only their weight diffrentiated the price i.e. he though you were buying a cheap brand of whatever, but actually you had bought an expensive brand of it? no |

So he weighed the object at the point in time it was sold and the scales showed the weight to be lighter than it really was. Right? Did someone put pressure from underneath the scales? Hmmm, just a thought. You said he was distracted by something. Did he put the object on the scales? Looked away because he was distracted? and someone (your wife?) removed something from the object thinking it was already weighed and thus made the object lighter? |

So was it something that can't be weighed on its own? Like when you weigh an animal? Did they weigh you, and then weigh you holding the thing and subtracte your weight to get its weight? And you moved off the scales, making i seem lighter? |

And you moved off the scales, making i seem lighter? Wow Enjay that's some first post. You basically have the premise of the story but with some small detail omitted but certainly close enough to declare a *************SPOILER*************** My wife and I were buying a wrought iron side gate for our house. The company who made it did not deliver so you had to collect the gate yourself. They charged for the gate by weight. Their system involved your driving your car or van into their factory/workshop and going over a weighbridge which obviously calculated the weight of you vehicle and occupants. We collected the gate and loaded it into our trailer and proceeded back to the weighbridge. There were a few vehicles ahead of us so we were stationary for 5 or 10 minutes. Getting bored i decided to have a smoke. Now my wife detests my cigar smoking so i stepped out of the car and lit up. While enjoying my smoke my wife drove the car and trailer onto the weighbridge where the new weight was recorded. I then approached the booth and settled the bill. I was impressed at the value for money i had received as wrought iron is an expensive commodity ( In Ireland anyway) . It was only when discussing the value i'd received with a neighbour who had bought a similar gate at the same place did i begin to realise that a mistake had been made. It was much later when i realised that that i was ommited from the second weighing because i was outside the car smoking. Calulating the weight of the gate and subtracting my own weifht i was able to ascertain that i had saved £500 on the deal. Hope this makes sense. Thanks to all who played this especially Eli,Damia Rufus & Sunshine. This was my most active puzzle so far and i was hoping to get to 100 posts but never mind. By the way please don't ask if i went back to the gate people and paid them the money. I wouldn't want to lower your opinion of me |
