The odd bike On a walk through the pedestrian zone of the town Jane notices a small crowd of people. They are watching a man riding an ordinary bike as it seems. Coming closer, she sees that the bike is equiped with a gear that makes the front wheel incline to the right when you turn the handlebars to the left. The man with the bike turns out to be a sort of thimblerigger wanting the people around to take a ride on his bike. The prize to try the bike is exorbitant but the man promises to give back the triple sum to anyone who can make 10 meters on the bike. A young boy takes his try but fails on the first meter thus losing his money. The man shows again that it is possible to ride the bike, obviously he has learned to do so. Observing this, Jane leaves the place. She likes cycling but she is certainly not into trick cycling and anyway she is opposed to this sort of gambling. But Jane is a lateral thinker and keeps meditating on this incident on her walk. An hour later she cries out Eureka and rushes back to the place but the man with the bike is gone. She is persuaded that she would have been able to win a nice sum of money. What did she plan to do? Having taken the time to write down this story for you, I hope that it will take you at least as long as this (or as long as Jane took) to find out the solution... | ||

"As it seems" Does that mean that the bike was not ordinary? Was the bike a vehicle with two wheel, a handlebar and two pedals? Was there very little space, making it impossible to go 10 metres without going through traffic or something?Was this long enough? | ||

"As it seems" Does that mean that the bike was not ordinary? The only thing not ordinary about the bike is the steering as I tried to describe above, I hope it is clear. Was the bike a vehicle with two wheel, a handlebar and two pedals? yes to those Was there very little space, making it impossible to go 10 metres without going through traffic or something? There was enough space. Was this long enough? Sure.. | ||

If the boy hadn't tried riding the bike, would she have found the solution? Did something in her walk make her find out how to ride the bike? Is the answer related to physics (eg center of gravity)? | ||

Would she ride the bike backwards? no cross arms? yes. Congratulations Crazypalpig, this is the --------------------SPOILER-------------------- Jane planned to cross her arms, to put her left hand on the right side of the handlebars and vice versa. This story happened to me in a similar way several years ago. Unfortunately, I never had the occasion to test the method to cross my arms. The guy with the bike had just disappeared. However, you should try to ride on an ordinary bike with your arms crossed, I guess without training it is impossible. And if you ever see a guy with a bike like this please try this method.
