So now it's finally proven that it's not only a good thing. Time for me to get back to hosting a puzzle again. Gee, I've missed this site, lol |

So, is a way of teaching language, not only a good thing, or is it the teaching of language itself? |

Foulglory posted on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 6:55 pm: Is it a common practice in public schools? Private schools? if you think about the 'it' in the puzzle statement, it's neither. That is an object. Find out what that is, and you will soon understand the link to school and language |

So 'it' is an object that is supposed to be a good thing, but a side effect of it is that it negatively-ish affects children? Does the negative effect involve spelling? Grammar? Puntuation? Slang? Swearing? Prejudicial terms? Pronunciation? Handwriting? 'Nonsense' language? Learning foreign languages? |

have anything to do with computers? can't think of the term right now, but does it have to do with "abbreviated spelling", punctuation, etc. when typing, writing on a computer? for example="ru4real?" I have seen students write like this on tests when they are not even using computers. |

Booklover, Monday, April 30, 2007 - 12:37 pm: have anything to do with computers? Not computers, but.... can't think of the term right now, but does it have to do with "abbreviated spelling", punctuation, etc. when typing, writing on a computer? for example="ru4real?" But this is spot on. Had a feeling that it was going to be a quickie. So what other object do you use that kind of writing with?? I have seen students write like this on tests when they are not even using computers. |

Text messages on mobile phones? Yes, perfect *************SPOILER********************* On the day I started this puzzle, 25th April, there was a report in the Irish news that the spelling and grammar amongst Irish students have declined. Several students used the same "language" when writing their English papers as they used for mobile phone texting. And not many seem to read books or magazines, so they don't get a different input that way either. The mistakes were in spelling, grammar and punctuation (or better lack thereof). So what their parents thought to be a good thing, ie a phone to stay in touch and call for help if needed, was not ONLY good. |

I often find myself doing that while typing, if I have been using instant messaging and then switch to typing something formal... |
